Do you mean Radio 2 Facebook?

I remember when Peta announced it, months ago, and there seemed very little in the way of interesting fans' comments appearing on it so ignored it ever since.

Add facebook and R2ok and seems only about 200 of Radio 2's 12 million listeners actually care anything about the station, odd isn't it??

This looks more interesting :

Another way to interact, like twitter. It also saves the BBC money as the sites are operated by a 3rd party. I think it's disgraceful, as they should contribute a fee.

The site is with the new logo.

The BBC. Big organisations should contribute something.

I don't agree, because once that starts they start to influence the style, form and content. It's evident with YouTube now with all the corporate "channels" that exist and dominate the portal.

I don’t like the idea of BBC Programmes having a Facebook page- it’s all a bit down market and awkward. Maybe even a little desperate. It’s like a concession stand in a shop or shopping mall – not big enough to have their own shop, so they set up an annoying chugga-style stand in someone else’s. It’s not cool be all up in that space.

Not sure I agree there, Rachel! Facebook is a good way to connect with lots of other spaces and have a link to lots of other discussions, so I can see the reasoning behind it and it's no different from the way Facebook, Twitter et all are being exploited by other organisations.

The pity of it is that the Beeb doesn't seem to know how to use Facebook properly..... Rolling Eyes

Nah! Facebook is for little people trying to be heard or for arranging a night out, and for sharing photos of a hen night etc with your friends; it’s not for corporate giants. They don’t sit well in that space, it’s clumsy and desperate of them to try it. It’s like Manchester United turning up at your local park, throwing a few jumpers down for goals then saying to everyone, hey come and watch us, we’re much better than your local kids having a knock about.

On top of that there’s the advertising aspect of it- Facebook is a commercial enterprise- other social networking sites are available- does the BBC promote them as much as it does Facebook and Twitter? On top of that there’s the adverts that appear on Facebook pages – adverts over which the Facebook user i.e. the BBC, has no control over. It’s not sufficient to say “ we don’t take any responsibility for external sites” especially when it’s an external site they have created and linked to from a BBC site. All sorts of adverts appear – is the BBC promoting those products too? Arguably, yes it is but worse than that, they have no control over what adverts are seen on their pages.

But most of all, it’s just a naff thing to do anyway. If the BBC- the World’s leading Broadcaster can’t connect with people, and after hundreds of meeting with hundreds of experts, a page or two on Facebook is the innovative way forward being tried to improve their connection statistics, then they’ve lost the plot, it’s not a connection improvement strategy, it’s a red-faced global admission that they cannot do their job.

I'm not entirely in agreement with your thesis on the BBC and social media networks, but I certainly agree with your last point regarding the fact that the BBC has lost the plot where "connectivity" in concerned.

One only has to look at the utterly appalling manner in which Radio 2 is currently being managed to see evidence of this.

Does MySpace have a page on Facebook or vicy-vercy: perhaps they’re both on Friendsreunited?

The BBC has one of the, if not, the largest, Broadcasting and IT Budgets on the Planet- yet needs to boast its position from the lofty heights on the shoulders of an American student’s website that he uses for keeping in contact with his mates from school. Makes no sense. If you look at any of the BBC’s web interaction with “the people” Blogs- Messageboards etc – you’ll find that there are very few, probably in the hundreds; oh go on then, I’ll be generous, maybe a few thousand people bother with them at all. The effort and cost is disproportionate for such a derisory result. Surely they would connect more, if they spent the cash on producing better programmes- the sort people want to listen to. As my great grandma used to say. “you don’t need everything to be everything”.

I only counted one dissenting comment. I'm really surprised it's still there, to be honest, unless it's meant to be a token atempt at democracy, a way of saying "we're big enough to allow critical comment, even though as you can see the overwhelming majority of our listeners love Chris Evans".

all very depressing.

I went on the "your Music" discussion when the R2 messageboard closed down, as I wasn't too sure about joining this and the EA board. More to do with my experiances on the old Jezza's forum I went on a few years ago I really didn't like the idiots on there.

I posted a couple of times on the FB page not really much of a reply, I think Itchy and Scorpio posted and then it just died.

Good job (for me that is) this place is nice, and the EA is alright when I want to go Daily Mail Reader baiting Wink

Awww I like your posts Undiscovered - always enjoy reading. Didn't you post some links up to some of your music once or am I getting you mixed up with someone else?

I haven't even looked at the facebook tbh. I did however sign up to the Radio 2 twitter thing. I joined twitter meself about a fortnight ago (not a clue what I'm doing and haven't actually twittered meself Confused but now have two followers - one of whom is my mate Luke off the old board.

The Radio 2 twitter is actually rather dull - it just basically says who's on air now. I thought it would be more pointing you in the direction of special features, documentaries etc. rather than just Steve Wright's on air now, Simon Mayo's on air now ... etc. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I just don’t get it with facebook and twitter on Radio 2. To have a facebook or twitter account, you must already have web access and an e-mail address for facebook, and without a mobile phone, twitter is just a pointless web based message-board, so twitter is about being interesting and mobile for which you need to be interesting and mobile, and have a mobile phone.

If you have an e-mail address and a mobile phone then you can contact any Radio 2 show by e-mail or post or by text message- some of them even allow us, shudder the thought, to telephone. Imagine that- proper communication. Talking! Hang on: we may be onto something big here. We should write this down. I can just hear them in the meeting room now, texting each other, with ideas on how to launch the latest concept communication. Conversation. What?! Talking out loud. Nah. That’ll never catch on.

The first click... Oh, I'll start a new thread on that.

That explains it then. I have to log on to twitter to read the twitters and it's just 'so and so's on', 'so and so's on' etc. and I'm thinking to meself, is this what Stephen Fry and all them are going on about?

I saw the thing about entering your mobile phone no. but to be honest it would drive me demented. I get about one text a week and the thought of it twittering every five minutes ... Shocked

SS - no I didn't post any music (you are the lucky ones) but I did promise to post a YT of me at a Carter gig in 1990 although I now own the video I ahevn't come across anyone who has any way of converting it to digital, and I think Colin gets enough questions, but it will be on one day Embarassed

I go on Fb most days an if anything has helped me become more active politically and meet new people who are into to some things that I am, as well as old school friends. Some groups do have a lot of chat on it, quite a few that I go on are difficult to keep up with, but the Radio 2 one is not like that at all.

Corporates do go on there as they think it's the way to enter conversation wit the kiddywinks, but they may be young but they in general are not stupid

Twitter isn't for me, well not at this time

What video format is it? VHS? Right this minute I'm converting some VHS and S-VHS video for inclusion in Open University course materials which will be accessible for download to as video podcasts on iPhones and iPads.

We have the technology! Smile

Yes VHS although it took me a while to find someone I knew who had a VHS player that still worked but yes I planned to put it onto DVD so at least I could watch it when getting all nostalgic.

Would a DVD recorder plugged into the VHS be the right direction ?

That's the easiest way to do it, though for better quality and more stable transfer/conversion it's better to get it done professionally.

It depends on what quality you want to end up with.

It'll cost you "from £9.95" (depending upon duration) for a direct-to-DVD copy via Timebase Correction if required.

Ooops. Now there's a blatant commercial plug if ever there was one!! Smile
