Why does an intelligent broadcaster like Simon Mayo persist with this hangover from Evans' days?

I was unfortunate to catch this dross on a long drive down to Cornwall on Friday, is anyone really interested in the fact that Wayne and Tracy are on their way to pick up their Labrador puppy and are eating apples and pineapple cubes on their journey?

If this show must remain, come on Simon at least rename it, and give it your own stamp.

I don't listen to the show because, at the risk of being accused of elitism or musical snobbery, I don't trust the British public with choosing the music. That should be up to the professionals. OK, the Radio 2 producers do pick a load of dross on their daytime shows (just listen to Ken Bruce!)but they do tend to know what they're doing and are paid for it.

Ask the public what they want and all you'll get is the usual fodder: ELO, Abba, Queen etc.).

He seems to have simply taken the script from CEs drivetime shows and carried on, incl the Thursday food / drink slot, the business news etc (which I used to enjoy with CE) and all he's added is old bits from his R1 days eg Confessions.

No new ideas I can see, thats probably why I find the show dull and boring Rolling Eyes

So Mark, do you think that the people that phone in are a fair representation of the R2 audience?

I think not, just the same type that are heard on the megaphone and hello goodbye slots. IMO most of us just ain't interested in what they're up to.

Schiz - seems someone's read your posts. He's playing some corkers today! Best show of his I've heard in ages. Hope it continues, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'd normally say that I hate shows like this, and breakfast, which interact with the public.

But then at 8pm I listen to R&M and love the interaction there!

I agreee Schizoidman it's the same old overplayed songs every week. I don't listen that often on Fridays.

The other week someone said "you haven't got my first choice" which was relevant to her reason for calling,"so I'll have to have this............." She did say what it was but I can't remember the title. It confirmed what I always thought that it's a very limited selection that they use.

The real choice for listeners I think might be somewhat more limited than we are led to believe
Obviously every caller speaks with a researcher first before going on air so how do we know that what is purported to have been choosen really is the caller's choice
For all we know they could be told by an operative sorry we don't have that track but you can go on air and request this one if you wish
Call me cynical you might but I don't think most people have much idea of how listeners can get manipulated

I think its a careful balance. Interaction can be good BUT only if it is controlled and not the main stay of the shows.

The shows that simply use the listeners to text/email in on a thought up topic are just time fillers to me for DJs who have no ideas or anything worth talking about.

Soulsis: I was thinking exactly the same! The music was far better today than usual. The superb Valerie by Amy W and Mark Ronson, The Love I Lost- a great Philly song, and the great Boogie Oogie Oogie (normally I criticise KB for the 70s disco). Then (according to the playlist, as I only heard the first few songs) the sublime Some Of Your Loving by Dusty -though that was a track of someone's years.

I just wonder if it's a different producer this week. Hopefully Gary Bones is on a long holiday as he's responsible for the dirge that KB normally gets lumbered with.

Ruddles: I think that the presenters on request shows like Mayo on Friday just have Greatest Hits CDs with them. So when Joe Public requests Dancing Queen, no problem, just pull out Abba's greatest hits. But if he requests a more obscure track like The Eagle or Our Last Summer, oops there's a problem, they haven't got the relevant CD so can't play it.

There was a classic moment about two months ago when Lisa Tarbuck was asked to play something reasonably obscure-an album track or something-which clearly she didn't have (or had not heard of). 'Can't we play some Abba or Queen?' was her pitiful reply.

I think that Drivetime is brilliant. Simon's show is the only R2 programme that I listen to on a regular basis. I have to admit the all request show is the weakest show of the week but Monday to Thursday Simon in my opinion is just brilliant. Very Happy

There's little excuse for "not having the track" since very few tracks are played from CD these days. Most stuff plays off the central server system, which is great a big equivalent of iTunes with more bells & whistles. So, when they say they don't have the track, what they mean is that the producer doesn't want to pull it from the server!

I agree Dharma Simon has always oused quality whatever network he has been on
I actually like All Request Friday but it is a pity we don't get a wider variety of music there
It probably goes back to what has been said in previous posts
To me the weekend always starts there

Funnily enough I've heard Mark Radcliffe say the same thing, on more than one occasion, and on others, that they've had to "go somewhere else" for a certain track.

In the "old days" the BBC Record Library was famous for holding every record which had ever been issued commercially in this country. I wonder how comprehensive their "central server system" is nowadays?

Anything that was acquired on CD or other digital file is easy to get into the system because the essential metadata (the data that describes the content) goes with it just like Gracenote data fills in an iTunes import, but analogue sources on disc and tape need this data to be input manually and that's a different ballgame which costs time and money.

These days, the record companies don't have submit their new releases on CD - they only have a login to the system and upload it (plus metadata) themselves. It's possible for a presenter to play a new track within 60 seconds of a record company submitting it because it flags in a "latest uploads" list on the system which is accessible right across the BBC network.

The computer that is at the heart of every DJ console can pull the file, have it cued and on the press of a button (and an open fader) it plays out.

Didn't I hear CE say once there was a choice of 45,000 tracks ? Which to me is poor as my ipod has 18,000 and that certainly doesn't cover everyones tastes.

Maybe its the fact that his show has to follow the same format as his predessor, and he's not being allowed to be his own man.

IMO Wogans departure has been a disaster for BBC radio causing a domino effect, with each replacement not fitting the bill (Evans for Wogan, Mayo for Evans, Bacon for Mayo and Livsley for Bacon). All missed opportunities.

Of course the standard for Drivetme in recent years was set by Johnnie Walker with Stuart Maconie coming a very close second but I find Simon Mayo's show very enjoyable as well. I agree that the Friday Request Show isn't wonderful but still OK. Just think who Simon replaced and thank your god. Now if only the morning show (rapidly expanding Mad ) could get a new presenter........

He may have been talking about the old Carousel system which was reputedly living in the basement of BH and which stored physical CDs which were accessed by the computer system and played in to the DJ console as required. Johnnie Walker used to talk about whether or not a given CD was "on the Carousel yet" etc etc.

The current system has a huge capacity with more material being added every hour.

I like Mayo, I can tolerate Evans, and Livesey is fine... but Bacon is an absolute disaster in that afternoon slot. Every guest run rings around him, and he doesn't even bother listening to what they have to say. Yesterday's encounter with Michael Parkinson was painful.

I can't comment on Parkinson's interview, but I have to say that I hold Bacon in great esteem as a broadcaster quite simply because he does it differently - it's 'knowingly theatre', the way he parodies the art of radio makes me smile.

But I can see why it rubs some people up the wrong way.
