I know I've said this before but blimey this Internet radio caper is good... I'm working outside doing some timber work and, for a change from KYA, I have it tuned to a station called "Got Radio" featuring Big Band and Swing Music, just right for how I feel at the moment!
They just played "Kalamazoo" which always makes my day!
I've always drooled over that old style of harmonising as delivered by the Andrews Sisters and heck, those old Bands really pumped it out!

Currently playing "Someone to Watch Over Me", and now "Night and Day" sung superbly of course...
I don't know much about who's who in this field but I love the music!
This really is a great alternative to Radio 2...

When you look at the sheer range of stuff that's available online now it makes you realise what a complete waste of space most of Radio 2 now is. It also demonstrates just how old-hat most of the presentation is, too (eg: Chris Evans' show). Quite why people stick with it is beyond me!!!

The other day I was tidying up the shed whilst listening to internet radio via ShoutCast on my iPhone - it was well within reach of my WiFi router and was perfect!

I listen to 97.1 Coast FM Limassol Cyprus quite often
Great reception with no talk just music(and adverts)
Run by ex BBC man David Symonds
Absolutely fantastic when Radio 2 is abysmal
Or even when it isn't come to think of it!

Yes, the music choice available is just mind blowing.. I'm still with the Big and Swing music station I found yesterday. My foot hasn't tapped so much in ages! Laughing

But for me, as I suggested, most times it's music I want to hear.. music I like and which makes me feel good. As much as I like the idea of Radio 2, I have to say over the last year or so, it actually winds me up so much it's hardly worth tuning in!

I really can't stand to listen to Evans, Ball or O'Leary. Ken Bruce is great but... his critics are right imo, he is getting predictable.. specially the interaction with him and that Welsh woman.. and the music is bland.
Wrighty is fine by me with all his features and I find him funny but again, the music is only so so.. in fact, that's the main problem, most of the daytime music on Radio 2 is dull and boring.

But also, many of the people interviewed as guests on shows generally irritate me! full of self praise, talking about stuff I'm not remotely interested in, X Factor Evil or Very Mad Celebs etc.. and some are just well.. thick it seems. Do they do this on purpose? that Johhny bloke on with Evans for example.. he makes out he has no commonsense or practical skills whatsoever and I can't believe that for a start... it is like a kid's show.

That's why I like the R&M show so much.. they're down to earth blokes and talk as anybody else I know would.

I don't normally listen on a Sunday evening but that show with Desmond Carrington appeals to me a lot.. everything he talks about is interesting and music based.

So yes, Internet radio is for me lately, Big Band, Rock & Roll, Doo Wop, etc.. it's so much better.

The problem is that, more than ever before, today's media is obsessed with (a) celebrity, and (b) the making of celebrities (where the latter is the means of creating more product for the former).

And, of course, celebrities have to have something to sell in order to maintain a constant media presence. The way that the media plays lapdog to these people (many of whom are, as you rightly say, thick) is lamentable. Radio 2 is as big an offender as any other media outlet these days and that's why I too dislike most of its output. The Steve Wright show is a perfect example of a show that treats its guests as products and its presenter doesn't really care about those he's interviewing - you can tell. And he's not alone among R2 presentation staff, by any means.

I had to endure the first 15 minutes of Evans on Monday morning from 6.30am and I can honestly say it's the worst radio I've heard in......well, of all time. It's absolutely awful! Evans is like a cat on hot bricks; he obviously can't sit down, he hugs the mic, talks very loudly and quickly and is deluded enough to think that I'm actually interested in his amateurish, egotistical and (very) dated presentation style. He's not only irritating but also very boring all at the same time.

Anyway, enough of that idiot.

Yes, I love listening to those two. It's like eavesdropping on a couple of blokes musing over life, music and everything else as they sit sipping pints of Stout in the corner of a nice old pub! Sometimes I think they forget they're on national radio! Smile

I'm now listening, via iPlayer, to "Bob Harris: A celebration of John Lennon".

Isn't Bob Harris a true professional? He has a lovely radio voice and an informative yet engaging presentation style that's all too rare these days.

You're right Colin.. Maybe in time all these "celebs" obsessed with, and forever talking about other "celebs", will disappear up their own jack-sees.. I hope they do.
A prime example to me of a complete non entity is that fellow who walked off the Buzz-cocks show.. Preston somebody.. I mean, what the hell is he? do I want to hear about him on a grown up's station?

I realise that some posters don't like criticism of the Breakfast Show but yesterday Mr Evans was getting excited about texts from drivers describing what loads their trucks are carrying.. and went on (and on) to fantasize what else a truck could carry.. Rolling Eyes
He then said he'd always wanted to drive a Cement Mixer through the town which prompted the excited Johnny to say " Yeah, with the big whirly thing going round" I had to turn it off.

I had one outside my house on Monday. One of my near-neighbours is having a house extension built. I could have taken a pic and sent it to him - parhaps he would have been overcome with ecstacy on air.

On second thoughts, let's not even go there...! Smile
