I think I know which one you mean (and I think it's rubbish). It's one site which refuses members who use free 3rd party acounts like Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

As a webmaster myself, I know from bitter experience that a spammer (whether human or robot) will use free email accounts to hide their identity, and that's why neither I nor my colleagues allow this either. If we do, we watch their activity really carefully.

The idea of levying a charge means that it forces some kind of commitment from the member not to engage in trolling, spamming or posting links to other sites of spurious content (this is usually done by robots anyhow).

In general, I think it's a good idea. However, in the case of the site you're probably referring to, I wouldn't bother in the least because I think it's appalling!

When I found myself in times of trouble.... here, I did for a short while (after exchanging e-mails) ask new members to use another e-mail instead of yahoo etc, but I don't bother now. Quite a few of our new ex R2MB members have 'free' e-mail addresses and I just didn't want to upset them Smile

and thanks for that John,

The trouble is for non techs like myself these free email addresses are ideal mostly because of the unlimited memory, but on the dark side I have had an issue with my account sending emails to all my address book a link to a porn site Evil or Very Mad which is great as I do use the account for work and have contacts with schools because of that. Embarassed
