I heard about this on Shaun Keaveney's show (6 Music). The cover of the David Bowie song is to raise money for the Help For Heroes charity.

The horrified e-mails are already pouring in - one listener said they couldn't listen to Jeff Buckley's version of 'Hallelujah' anymore due to the Alexandra Burke atrocity.

It's the same every year - Cowell finds a song to cover that's untouchable according to the Mojos and Uncuts of this world. The year when John & Yoko's 'Happy Christmas (War Is Over)' was butchered was pretty bad!

God forbid they don't do a cover of Genesis's 'Supper's Ready' for to fund Meals On Wheels!

My knowledge of copyright and reproduction law is not intimate, but as I understand it, the original writers/recording artists have to give their permission for their songs to be covered, whether in live performance, on record or in advertising. So presumably David Bowie has given his blessing for Heroes to be butchered for Christmas, er, sorry, charity.

Permission has to be given for recording but not for public performance on stage because the latter will be covered by a PRS agreement with the venue.

After all, you don't need the permission of the songwriter to sing a song in a pub.

No songs are safe these days from the 'new' pop stars of today, they will murder any song for a quick buck Rolling Eyes

You've got to give it to SC he certainly knows how to use the music industry to make money Rolling Eyes
(He's never had any of mine, that I know of Very Happy )

And what bugs me about this is that Bowie would not allow Peter Gabriel permission to cover it on the 'Scratch My Back' album, but Brian Eno, the co-writer, did.

Is Simon Cowell a secret Peter Gabriel fan?

Oh come on! I bet you bought a Robson & Jerome CD back in the day! Wink Or even Wonderdog (ouch!)

All these charity records are so disposable, I am very sceptical about the motives behind them. I somehow think they are used just to promote the participating artists, its funny how quite often they release their own material shortly after a 'charity' release.

I'm also cynical about the money getting through to the needy, I'm sure I read somewhere that a lot of the Band Aid money saw the Ethiopian government OK for prestige vehicles for a few years.

The original Band Aid & USA for Africa singles where memorable, but when did you last hear Band Aid 2, Band Aid 20 or any previous XFactor charity songs, or indeed any XFactor winning artist song (let alone remember them)?

And on that subject I hate what Cowell has done for the Xmas No.1 slot, never again will a single reach the top on merit, Xfactor/Facebook will now dictate.

If only Wonderdog had been put down back in 1982 how different the UK music scene would be today.... http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2009/05/17/lead-singer-simon-115875-21365334/

I heard yesterday that a group on Facebook are trying to organise a download with simply 4 minutes of total silence to keep X Factor off the Christmas Number One spot
Hope they succeed
Its got to be better than the dross they asked people to buy and download last year
It was almost as bad as X Factor itself Sad

Not all artists own the rights to their songs...when Michael Jackson bought the Beatles song publishing ...the ex Beatles had no say in who recorded their songs

Not all four of the Beatles - only Lennon & McCartney's, which were owned originally by Northern Songs, part of Lew Grade's empire and now part of Sony. Both Ringo's and George's material is owned by Starkey Music and Harrisongs respectively.

Tiny, do you remember a Day Today spoof of the Rock & Roll Years that used Clodagh Rodgers' 'Jack In The Box' to back footage of John F. Kennedy's funeral?

Vintage TV brings this back to me whenever they use news footage with songs from certain years!
