I was listening to my OH and my sister in law talking about X factor the other day. They said something that made me bang my fists on the table. They said so and so had a better personality ?

What the hell has having a good personality got to do with being a good singer /songwriter/ band member?
I'm not saying that they shouldn't be nice but what does it matter.
My favorite band is Spiritualized and my afection for J's music and lyrics is unwavering but I'm pretty confident if I met him I wouldn't like him or more to the point he wouldn't like me.
Morressey is the same great singer /songwriter but a complete K*$% sometimes.

Since when it become mandatory for "artists" (that's an X factor word not mine) to have a good personality ? Twisted Evil

Totally agree
It is a well known fact that most talented musicians are an absolute pain in the backside to deal with
One reason the X Factor exists is because record companies like that which Mr Cowell is involved in much prefer to have young innocent and green talent show winners rather than quality musicians who have worked their way up on the circuit because they see them as more manipulable and less likely to have attitude problems
Most good music today exists despite the record companies rather than because of it a ludicrous situation to be sure.

Or as a guy that ruddlescat knows would say (see Quiz and Trivia Zone ..Mixed up book title's thread) "'You Know, that really gets up my goat".. Very Happy

And the little charmer that is Liam Gallagher ...when his brother Noel was attacked on stage he said he couldn't understand why someone would get on stage and attack him and not Liam.... Laughing

Part of the reason that Oasis got so big was because of their attitude.

Morressey's The world is full of crashing bores sums up my opinion of "pop" music these days.

Cowell's attitude towards his charges reminds me of a certain boss who can patronise people with learning disabilities whereas she can't deal that well with me.

Good thread Undiscovered (where's that thumbs up smiley when you need it?).

This is something I've thought about a lot and the answer (for me) is that, yes if the person is a bit of a tw*t, then it does have an influence on whether I can get into their music or not.

Ritchie Blackmore is a case in point. I know he's a fine, probably great guitarist but the bloke himself is a (rude word). I know this, not just from what I've read, but from speaking to people who have worked with him and know him. So whenever I hear something he's done, even the great stuff, it's tinged with a dislike of what I know of him. There are a few others as well, who I've been told about, again through people whose opinions I trust, and who have had personal contact with the individual concerned, and it definitely puts the mockers on my enjoyment of their music to a greater or lesser degree.

Probably the best (or worst) example for me is John Legend, who on the face of it would be someone who is right up my street musically. Unfortunately I can't abide the bloke, and on this occasion it's not based on any personal experience, or knowing anyone who knows him. Just the fact he called himself 'Legend' (his name is John Stephens), how he's come across in interviews and performances, that smug expression, some of his videos - just his whole persona really. One of the last threads on the Your Music board, was about his new album and how much better it is than anything he's done before, but because of my dislike of his personality/character, I couldn't bring myself to buy it, even if it was the greatest album ever made.

Just because you've got a degree of musical talent or you're successful, rich, famous etc. - it doesn't mean you get carte blanche to behave badly or be unpleasant or difficult or arrogant ... and unfortunately, there are some who do.

I think personality is a big factor to be honest, in Strictly Come Dancing for example, if you read threads and forums a lot of people will say they don't like this one or that one, regardless of how good they may be on the dance floor.

Can I also just say that through my work over the years and friends and contacts in the music business, I have met a lot of actors, celebrities and musicians (and radio presenters), the vast majority of whom have been very nice, self effacing, down to earth people. So I think being a complete tw*t doesn't necessarily go with the territory.

And if people ignored their tantrums etc like you do with a naughty child they'd soon come round and act reasonably....well that's how I see it... Very Happy

And that's how the great British viewing public makes its voting decisions, too. How many people are able to vote on the basis of real dancing skill? A very small minority. It's exactly the same with the X-Factory.

That's why I want Ann Widdecombe to win. Dancing skill really doesn't have anything to do with it.
