to air completely differing styles of show throughout the day, you will attract different listeners from different ponds so the total catch at the end of the day.. is much bigger than 9 million.....
it makes it easy to attract additional listeners by putting out unusual bait..... This is exactly the kind of strategy that I thought would be right up your street..... I don’t understand why you don’t get it.....

Yes yes I get it Rachel, thanks. I just didn't think THAT was what you were getting at in earllier Evans-loving posts Confused

Yes Yes Yes!

Yes, so you still think those two shows of cheese are essential for 9 million listeners.

But there are 9 million more like me who ignore both shows now. Smile

Ah good! Now think- funding in pence per week per unique listener. Now you see reach is important. Think bigger reach more pennies, more pounds , more cash to spend, better programmes, bigger reach, more pennies, more pounds, more cash to spend, better programmes, bigger reach until everyone listens to Radio 2 at some point during the week.

What would happen to Tesco if they sold only baked beans from 5am to 7pm weekdays? Any chance of a pork pie? No, we only do pork pies between midnight and 5am. How about a sauasage or two? Nope! You’ll have to come back at the weekend. Milk? Oh we’ve sacked milk, it doesn’t go with beans etc etc…

Yes Breakfast and Drivetime between them capture all Radio 2 listeners- statistically anyway. They are good for funding- see them as a cash cow to fund better more sophisticated programming. We all have our cross to bear.

I do like the Chris Evans show though – it’s good for executive stress relief. Smile It's better than those swinging ball things anyway.

I know you don't like Chris, but to say that ANY DJ only gets decent listening figures because people haven't got the time to turn the radio over is just wrong.
I did try and disagree with Jill Hickman on the R2 messageboards but I received a reply written entirely in capitals, which showed she wasn't reasonable so I haven't bothered since.
I enjoy reading your posts but if I think something is absurd I can't see the problem with stating that.
Saying that if you think I am picking on you then I do apologise and say that it is not my intention.
Gaz

Sorry you felt that way Gazmando - I can assure you, however, that I am very reasonable and I do remember once responding to somebody by 'shouting' but it was because everyone (including the moderator) totally missed the point that, where I live, there was absolutely nothing I could tune into that bore any resemblance to that which had been denied me. I am sure you have felt frustrated when people do not understand the point you are making.

I hope you feel you can communicate with me now and trust, from other posts on this board, you will see that I, like Helen, only state what I feel without any intention to upset anyone. I do not have money to throw on technology when I have a perfectly good radio that I would love to use.

It's certainly good for stress relief purposes. The only problem is that the "Off" button on our alarm-clock radio has been thumped so hard this last couple of weeks that it needs replacing!

BTW - I sent a text message to Evans this morning. It read "Mooooorning Chris. You're sounding like a hyper-ventilating cat on heat. Can you please shout a bit more quietly. Somebody's trying to sleep!".

I haven't yet received a reply.

Cool

You reckon?

It has the reverse effect on me, this morning I left home in a bad mood as I swapped cars with my OH, unfortunately she had left the radio on R2, and I caught the goon as soon as I engaged the ignition.

I drove off like a man possessed hope she still has some clutch left.....

To avoid the guy now is very difficult . YOU VILL LIKE HIM....

I don't see what that has to do with Radio 2 which is funded by a licence/tax whether the shows are good or not.

Brekkie and Drivetime get lots of listeners but only because of their prime-time slots on the schedule (people have their radios on). The shows themselves are just like the commercial stations but without adverts.

Having no adverts has a lot to do with their big listener numbers, more than who presents, and more than the music which is mainly soft rock like all the commercial stations.

So basically the shows are not very good but get big numbers because they are national and they have no adverts.

This is turning into hard work, maybe it's better just to leave it. Oh go on then one more go.

John, how do you think they really set the level of funding? Why do you think RAJAR numbers are so important? They don't gather all that data just for the fun of it!

It is hard work Rachel Laughing

I'm saying R2's brekkie and Drivetime shows will get good Rajars whether they are good or bad shows.

In my opinion the shows are not very good but get big numbers because they are on at peak listening times, they are national and they have no adverts.

If most of the funding is gained through them and the system, then let's provide something for the missing daytime audience (folks who like Parky, Titchmarsh etc) in place of Ken Bruce and Steve Wright.

yay!! That's exactly what I'm saying, get rid of the two, two and a half and three hour slot daily shows during the day- replace them with proper music based shows - not necessarily on every day but have a broad selection of one and two hour shows across the week, with everything from, 40s 50s,60s 70s 80s 90s Jazz, Classic, Heavy Rock, Country, Blues, in fact every genre, an hour of Popmaster on a Tuesday, maybe Jezza just on a Friday for two hours- really mix it up- get more people listening maybe not all at the same time but across the week the “reach” ( last time I’m gonna say it I promise) would be huge.
That's value for money and people may just learn something about music!

How can you say that there are no adverts on radio.
Ok so they not selling something for money but the constant big upping of shows is so tedious

As mobile broadband bandwidth improves and more and more people use smartphones (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc) to access the internet wherever they are, so the old model of "radio" will be kicked aside.

I use "SHOUTCast!" on my iPhone to give me access to an infinite number of sources - sources much better than Radio 2.

And, of course, the "metrics" are simplified, too; as a supplier the measurement of who's listening/watching/downloading etc is readily available. Google Analytics can tell providers all they need to know about their user base ("listening public" in old money).

Radio as we know is dying fast - as is the RAJAR-like measurement system.

I haven't been listening to "radio" all day - I've been using Spotify!

All that technology, Colin, but you can’t get it to wake you up in the morning! You’re still using an old clock radio stuck on Radio 2. Smile Laughing

Ken and Steve also have a healthy listenership.

As much as I don't like either the drivetime or breakfast shows, there is absolutely NO WAY I would want to hear the likes of Parky or Alan Pitchfork on in the weekday, next you'll be wanting Sing Something Simple back!

I respect the fact that there are people who listen to the likes of the above and steer clear of R2 at the weekend for that reason.

I spend a lot of time in the car during the working week, as do many others. Steve & Ken's shows are disposable radio shows for listeners, many who are working, to dip in and out of, specialist shows require a different listenership, and need your full attention.

Until recently Radio 2 worked fine with the present format, and has done so for years, its the people not the format that need changing. If what Rachel is advocating were to happen, you would have to keep a copy of the Radio Times in your car, to see whats on this afternoon whilst you commute along the M4!

Have your specialist shows by all means but please not in the daytime.

Me too. I just wish he'd accept that offer to host the Community Radio Warrington Weekday Brunch Show. It starts at 6.00am and finishes at mid-day, apparently.

He must be yearning to return to his old home town. Here's the chance.

I wish he would go to say America or at least somewhere far away
Warrington is dangerously close to here
I wouldn't fancy bumping into him in Tesco
There again they do have a very good fish counter and everyone tells me I'm quite a good fish slinger after I threw one at Patrick Kielty a few years ago
He threw it back in the audience and apparently it damaged a womans £1000 dress which made him popular
Perhaps he decided to do his recent stint on Radio 2 to get his own back Shocked

I wouldn't want specialist shows in the daytime either, but I most definitely would like some more variety in the music.
Daytime Radio 2 used to be musically very varied, where you could hear stuff from the 50's up to present day stuff. Why can't it go back to that instead of 6 or 7 modern records on such heavy rotation?

I'll second that, one of my main reasons to listening to the radio was to hear the occasional new song/artist. In the past Radio 2 has introduced me to several artists I had not even heard of before, this just doesn't happen any more, not during day-time anyway.

Are they still playing Alesha Dixon's: The Boy Does Nothing?

What about daily during one of the slots currently occupied by Ken & Steve, say 20mins were given to new music/artists?

I would also like to hear half an hour given daily to a random year, anything from the 50's (or occasionally before) to the present day, I guess along along the lines of the old Golden Hour, or in this case half hour.

There are over 50 years to choose from so that would take over 10 rolling weeks to complete, so repetition would never happen, playing more obscure hits from that year. What about Evans doing this in the 9 - 9.30 slot, it may just win him a few more listeners.

But would these new artists appeal to older listeners? I somehow doubt it especially if they are X Factor types.

I actually think there are too many 'slots' in some of the shows and they no longer flow because of them.

I would like to hear new music but as Helen says it will just be X-factor types who we are bombarded with everywhere else. The BBC just seems to be on the X-factor bandwagon these days. Rolling Eyes

I like the idea of the slot for older songs, they are too rare on R2 these days. Very Happy

I've long thought there should be an 'old album of the week' slot, and not not always the ones that were popular.

It's all part of the broader conspiracy to dumb down broadcasting and convert the viewing/listening public into complete morons. If they weren't to begin with, of course!

Hell no.

I'm avoiding tonight's Paul O'Grady show (not that I normally watch - I'm normally down the pub) because I've just learned that "me, me, me" is on it.

We normally watch P O'G but we retuned to watch New Tricks as soon as Evans was due to come on. It wasn't bad either.... we might watch that again Friday nights.... just the way it went with R2 I guess. Tune out... find something else.... stay away. Rolling Eyes

I guess it must be compulsory for all producers to engage in cross-promotion within the BBC these days - but only those things where the stakes are highest. Obviously, the command from on high is "Thou shalt promote SCD and Evans at every opportunity - or else".
