The Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexandar has been pictured with documents of cuts to spending review

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/liberaldemocrats/8073943/Danny-Alexander-reveals-500000-job-cuts-in-document-gaffe.html

Also another is a frozen to the TV Licence, which will include a 16% cut to the budget for the corporation. This was changed in 24 hours or things could have been worse for the BBC.

I trust the BBC will now reduce the salaries of many of its overpaid celebrities some of whom we have to suffer daily on Radio 2

I bet the cuts will to everybody but....

What bothers me is that the jobs of really good technical and production staff in both radio and TV, salaried and freelance, will be affected hugely.

It's the first step to privatising certain functions of the BBC. They've wanted this since Thatcher was in power and they'll get away with it they're allowed to.

I think Mark's idea, as illustrated by the thread title "AXE WEDNESDAY" , is under Government consideration. Reducing the week by 1/7 would save a heck of a lot of money Laughing

It would do. It would create a shorter working week for many people - and it would, at a stroke, provide a 20% cost saving on the 5-day week. Smile

Laughing

It's not the celebrities that are the main issue it's the over blown wages of the exec how can they be worth that much money. As Colin says it will be programming and proper jobs that are cut, maybe the website, 6music again, 1Xtra BBC2, 3+4.
This cost cutting is a smoke screen for cutting the BBC down to world service and the shipping forcast.

THe BBC is a truly wonderful institution, but like institutions has it's problems but not as many as is made out my the Daily Fail and their cronies.

The underlying issue here is that the Tories hate the BBC - this primarily goes back to the days of the miners' strike and Thatcher complaining that the corporation was biased (although, to be fair, all past PMs have made such claims). Thatcher wanted to cut the Beeb down to size, open the doors to free enterprise ("come in Mr. Murdoch, it's yours for the picking") but despite trying to move the goalposts with 1990 Broadcasting legislation she couldn't achieve it.

Now, with the backing of the Establishment, Cameron knows that he can get away with it. If he's allowed to, he will.

Let's hope BECTU has the balls to resist it. (I'm a former member of ACTT, by the way, which was merged into what is now BECTU). I worry that it hasn't.

Well they will go no support from the mainstream press, as the likes of Littlejohn will pull the "looney left" tag and ridicule people fighting for their livelyhoods.

Well we've seen it in France and now Italy maybe the BBC cut will be the catalyst that starts the fightback here.

I see a future and I think it looks a lot like Ireland Sad

I've just spoken to a friend who has worked in Post Production at Television Centre for 21 years and who now works on rolling 12-month contracts. He has been told that it is unlikely that his contract will be renewed next time round.

This makes me so angry.

This is going to get forgotten when the other cuts are announced which makes them all the more inevitable

The BBC are at last getting rid of the Deputy Director General.
Mark Byford has been at the BBC for 31 years. Does anyone know what he actually does?

He apparently heads up Marketing and stuff. Whatever that is. I'm not quite sure how his role has warranted a salary of £800,000 pa when my friend, who's a freelance cameraman with £30,000 worth of his own kit, is working to a daily rate that's less than it was 10 years ago!

His salary does indeed seem absolutely grotesque (strengthened no doubt by bonuses and a massive future pension).
It just shows that in all big organisations there is scope for cuts at the top.

Look i will lay my cards on the table and say i don't know much about politics altough i do follow some of it.I have always voted Labour as i see them as the party of the working man.I lost my job recently and i see a struggle ahead to get another one.
But have i missed something here? No word on the bankers no word on the tax dodgers that cost this country 15 billion a year?
The rich are gonna get richer and the poor poorer

There was a Dispatches on C4 about these tax loop hooles for the rich and guess who pops up in it? Our very own Chancellor aparently he managed to get away with £1.6m through tax evasion. How are we supposed to trust that he will close the loop holes when he himself benefits (sorry dirty word these days) and surrounds himself with the likes of Phillip Green who is one of the worse offenders?

'Sir' Philip Green is indeed one of the worst offenders.

It's particularly galling that this man has been appointed to advise on public sector cuts and 'waste' when he's stashing his millions in Monaco where his tax exile wife lives.

I had to laugh when a guest (can't remember who) on Have I Got News For You last week called him a fat greedy sh*t. Too bloody right.

The answer is, of course, the whole of the capitalist system which made it all possible and which ran risks for the sake of its own collective greed. As Chancellor, Gordon Brown let it happen - as the Tories would have if they were in power in the same period. After all, the Tories wanted even less regulation over the UK banking system, not more.

It's funny how they've not wanted to discuss this since coming to power - or how they would have reacted to the international banking crisis.

They're all to blame. One thing's for sure - I'm not.

It dosn't matter who was in Government at the time when the banks were about to go under, and the recession. The Tories would still had to borrow all the money and put this country into debt. The Tories are now in Government are just throwing the dirt at Labour now, because they are running the country. This country is in crises and people will suffer over the years.

I'am getting sick and tired watching the news, and they are interviewing people who are on the dole, or claiming other benefits, and making them out to be the ones who are hard done by. I saw one who has been claiming for the past 20 years and really looks un-employable anyway. They need to clean there acts up and get out there, without sitting back thinking everything is going to fall into there laps.

And? Are you saying that such people are somehow representative of all people who have been thrust onto the scrap-heap by greedy investment bankers and hedge-fund managers?

Fine, so how are you going to differentiate between those in need and those who feign poverty?

I am advised the loss of revenue through tax evasion is 58 times higher than that lost through benefit fraud
I don't seek to defend any type of illegality but just lets get a reality check here
I don't see any tax evasion hotline with a freephone number
Why the double standards?

We've mentioned Green on here but it's not just individuals, Vodafone owe us (ukplc) £6bn in tax and they have just been let off by HMRC, how much of this weeks cuts would £6bn have saved We're in this together

The Government want to sell of forests. They could sell them off to private investers who could build centre parks, etc. What's next on the agenda.

Yep today it has been reported by the Daily Fail of all papers that the way the Royal family receives money was changed last week so that they now receive money from the estates and is now likely to receive £38m a year from electricity generating companies from having wind turbines on her land.

But many landowners and farmers, even with just smallholdings, are often offered and accept payments to have wind turbines built on their land. It helps pay the rent and I suppose even the Queen is feeling the pinch.

Good

THey seem to be having a problem paying all over place, the Indian government are making them pay $2.5m, so the question is to our "we're all in this together" government why are big business getting away with it.
Same old Tories
