When we decided to take our barge over to France, my husband toyed with the idea of sailing it over, rather than on the back of a lorry. I refused point blank to accompany him, even though he said he would engage a professional skipper to accompany us. In the end, due to time constraints with waiting for a 'weather window' we took it over on the back of a lorry.

I'm so glad we did. There was a professional skipper on this barge which was coming from Holland to Dover.

Blimey, made me feel quite seasick just watching that. Hope the crockery was plastic.

That's one reason why, despite my dislike of flying and tunnels, a cross-Channel ferry would always be last on my list of methods of going abroad.

(Funny how there were spells of quite calm sea then mountainous waves)

I don't think there'd be much of anything left inside. Smile

It was being brought over by a couple who are going to use it as a houseboat on the Gloucester & Sharpness canal. The lifeboat guys were worried it would break up, and someone on the DBA website has suggested the rivets might need checking after that!

Thanks for the link Minx.. very interesting. The stresses on ships hulls in mountainous seas must be horrendous.
Looks like I must reprogramme my brain on the term "Barge"... I always thought a Barge was a flat topped hull with no superstructure or engine! Laughing
