Both Chris Moyles and Chris Evans have taken a drop in listening figures this quarter, with Moyles losing half a million on Radio 1 since three months ago.

At Radio 2, Evans lost 240,000 listeners this quarter but at 8.14m, he's still got more listeners than the breakfast slot 12 months ago, which had 7.76m.

Over all, Radio 1 reported 11.65 million listeners per week in the quarter, up from the 11.11m last year and slightly down its record high of 11.81 million in the previous quarter. Radio 2 has a reach of 13.68 million – up on last year’s 13.62m and down on last quarter’s 13.73m.

The success story for the BBC this quarter is Radio 3 which attracted nearly 300,000 additional listeners, up from 1.86m last quarter to 2.15 million people every week. Quarter 3 was a period when Radio 3 broadcast every single Prom live from the Royal Albert Hall.

Tim Davie, Director BBC Audio and Music, said: “These are strong figures for the industry, with BBC networks posting solid year-on-year performances after a quarter that saw records broken across the portfolio. Radio 3’s commitment to bring the BBC Proms to a wider audience has been rewarded as the network bounces back above the two million mark.”

Radio 4 has also gone down this quarter but still pulls in 10.37 million listeners.

In digital-only services, Radio 1Xtra posted a record 806,000 weekly listeners – up on last quarter’s 600,000 and last year’s 547,000, and an increase of 47.3 per cent year-on-year. BBC 6 Music attracted 1.20 million weekly listeners in the period – from 624,000 last year and 1.19m last quarter. Radio 7 has a weekly reach of 1.05 million - up both on last quarter (949,000) and last year (884,000) and the BBC Asian Network’s weekly reach is 462,000 listeners, from 437,000 last quarter and 357,000 last year.

So, not too bad for Evans, but a bit of a disaster for Moyles.
This will give Capital an edge in negotiating down his potential salary if they do take him on. Then again, why would Capital want a demonstrably failing dj?

The conclusion to be drawn from all this is that an increasing number of British people are disillusioned - not to say fed up - with radio in the UK in its current form. It's possible that, like me, people are also increasingly fed up with the BBC's two largest radio networks competing with each other by offering up content of equal banality at given times of the day - breakfast in particular.

I know several people who simply don't bother with radio at all these days - not just people of "a certain age" (like me) but also people in their 20s and 30s who are sick to the back teeth of the dumbed-down music-based formats presented by egotists we now have on R1 and R2.

Me Colin, I fit into one of your age brackets I'm not saying which one though.
CD's for me these days or being one of those R3 listeners.

6music nearly doubling since last year, not bad for a station that was going to be closed, although the publicity certainly has helped.

1Xtra gets a bit of a slagging off on here, but it is for the kiddiwinks. It seems to be picking up where R1 is losing, digital seems to be where people are going

Radio and music has changed people are more into their own personal music digital caters more for that kind of listener, and ipods and their radio channels may have something to do with it

I don't see evidence for this sweeping statement. Disillusioned with 1 and 2, maybe, but everything else is either the same or up, and the gap between BBC and Commercial has narrowed.

That's because so much of our popular music-based radio sounds so samey and bland. There's one jelly-mould into which it's all poured, and that's why our airwaves are full of the same rubbish.

So an extra half an hour from 7.00 to 7.30 equates to only an increase of 380,000? Not that brilliant. I wonder what the next quarter will tell us with the extra hour on the previous year ?

The increase in the other Digital Stations is probably those lost souls like myself who are still looking for a home........

The problem is that most of the new stations are limited to broadcasting on the failing DAB platform, so the playing field can't really be that level for stations hoping to take on BBC Bland Radio 2.

Chris Evans show has pretty much levelled out to what most insiders had predicted. Moyles keeps ranting on will turn listeners away. At the end of the day the BBC will continue to say they are winning over everyone else.

Depends how the figures are reported, I guess. The Grauniad says:

'Evans' breakfast show had an average weekly reach of 8.14 million listeners in the three months to 19 September. His audience between 7am and 9.30am was marginally down – 5,000 listeners – on the same period last year and has lost 1.4 million listeners since debuting with a record 9.5 million in the first three months of this year.'

so is it really not too bad for Evans? I know I'm one of those 5,000!

I can see Chris Evans pushing backwards to start at 6am in the future. It will happen.

I can see the hyperventilating creep taking over the station completely.

Oh, hang on, he very nearly has.

Let's hope he doesn't burn himself out before taking over the breakfast slot on Community Radio Warrington in the near future.

A change of 5000 is well within the margin of error and can't be taken seriously.

True, I'm not disputing that, but 1.4 million listeners lost sure isn't in the margin of error Wink

Yeah, but he's only lost what he put on. The figures aren't really any lower than Wogan's despite all the doom and gloom posted here.

However, to reiterate, it's still a collosal number of people who gave him a try only to decide that he's crap! To me that suggests something serious, and probably accounts for the desperate measures being taken by the BBC to impose him on us wherever possible in an effort to convince us that they're right and we're wrong.

I think the problem with Chris E may be his wildly fluctuating vocal tones. Now, Zoe Ball has a perfectly modulated voice....

The doom and gloom if you call it isn't at his rating, as you say he's not lost anything. They are snipping at Chris Evans is total. It's like some are possessive about him. Rolling Eyes

Yes he has - he's lost what he gained. And why might that be?

I'm not possessive about him - you can take possession of him yourself! Laughing Laughing Laughing (I think you might mean "obsessive").

Anyhow, the reason for the sniping is obvious: he's everywhere on the BBC, he's a berk - and many people are sick to death of him popping up everywhere. Nowhere is safe.
