Quote: | Blue Oyster Cult and Don't Fear The Reaper-must be played at full volume. |
amen to that. Practically anything by the blue Oyster Cult should be played with the volume right up, in fact.
I reccomend their heavy metal stompfests "Godzilla" and "ME 262" for starters: while BOC are thought of as the Thinking Man's Heavy Rock Band, neither of these songs is especially profound or deep. They aren't meant to be.
"I ain't going to play no surf music. I'm gonna play me some heavy music! I'm going to play it bad, I'm going to play it loud! And I know just what I want it to sound like! It's gonna sound like... It's gonna sound like..." (BOC, The Marshall Plan)
Having said that, Golden Age of Leather is another one to blast out loud. It marries Hells Angel lyrics to a sort of Beach Boys set of vocal harmonies and surf beat - the result is most unsettling, as the lyrics are definitely not squeaky-clean Beach Boys material. And how can you not play it loud when it begins
Raise your can of beer on high/And seal your fate forever!/Our best years have passed us by/The golden age of leather....
And of course "Last Days of May" must also be played loud - this is nothing if not country and western, but heavy metal C&W about a drug-buying expedition to Mexico that goes horribly wrong when the car breaks down in the border desert, and they realise it really does rain in Southern California... one Bob Harris might not consider out of place on his show, in fact.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvswK1uqCos (the historically inaccurate ME262, which had the amusing result that a band with three New York Jews in it was labelled "nazi". .. it's just bad-taste Spinal Tap-alike heavy metal..)

I love that track as well Mark. As carried over from another thread,( which went a bit off track so may not be spotted) does anyone else remember a track called "Child of Love" by Caston & Majors? It was played on Smooth (Motown Show) recently. When I looked it up it seems it was not released as a single here but I knew it and wondered why. Really love it, keeps going round in my head now. |

I've just been driving for an hour and in that time the volume knob was turned up very loudly to "Yours Is No Disgrace" by Yes from their debut album "The Yes Album". Fantastic. Fabulous, Wonderful. In fact - not bad at all.
I'm catching up with it now after wearing out the original vinyl LP all those years ago and every time I hear it I'm reminded of the exeptionally high standard of musicianship went into its creation. Bill Bruford's drumming is unbelievable as is Chris Squire's bass - two elements that weren't so apparent on the original.
Of course, after "Close To The Edge", Bruford left Yes for another band. SchizoidMan will know which one! |

Colin: I know the answer to that one! Bruford did indeed join King Crimson in about 1972 although I preferred the band in 1969/70 (In The Court Of.. and In The Wake Of Poseidon).
By the way, The Yes Album was not their debut. Their first was Yes in 1969 and their second was Time And A Word in 1970 though I don't think they were big hits. Having said that, my favourite album is Going For The One from 1977, ironically the year of punk which killed prog rock. |

You're absolutely right. I'd forgotten about the others! I didn't see them perform until The Yes Album was released and that was the one that got them established.

I lost interest after Topographic Oceans because it all got silly, as Rick Wakeman has often said himself.
My favourite Yes album is "Close To The Edge".
By the way, I remember that it was really pub rock (the Feelgoods and all) who rang the death-knell for prog in 1975/76, with Punk nailing the coffin in 76/77. Although I went to lots of punk gigs I never admitted to liking both the Sex Pistols AND Yes!!!!! |

I too lost interest in Yes in the later years: Owner Of A Lonely Heart!? more like Abba on speed. Radio 2 daytime fodder. |

Not arf, pop pickers!! If a Radio 2 producer has to choose a Yes track to play in daytime, it will inevitably be that (awful) song. Says it all about Radio 2, really.
It's the same with ELP; how many times will we have to suffer Greg Lake's putrid "I Believe in Father Christmas" on Radio 2 and, even worse still, in retail stores in the run-up to Christmas? |

For really LOUD stuff, how about Ian Hunter's "Once bitten, twice shy". I was playing it full blast in the car earlier and after it finished I put on Smooth Radio, and the DJ played another song of the same name - a dire dirge by some bint called Lewis(???). I could have cried, but instead I went back to the old tape with its classic opening of "'Allo". I followed up with Janis Joplin's version of Piece of my Heart and the Young Rascals' "Get me to the world on time". Bliss, sorry....BLISS (loud). _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

The other half tells me old age is catching up on me .... It was the Electric Prunes version of "Get me to the world on time" and Vesta Williams' "Once bitten....".
Oh well....back to 2-4-6-8 Motorway.... _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

For something really loud, how about the opening track of Monster by REM-- 'What's The Frequency Kenneth?' followed by 'Crush With Eyeliner'.
It doesn't get better-or louder- than that. |

That sounds great Schiz and I was interested to read about how REM actually came up with the whole Kenneth thing
Apparently some gangsters in America attacked and shot a well known politician whose name has never been disclosed and as they ran away they were heard to shout
'What's the Frequency Kenneth?'
I believe that is where the song title came from but the strange thing is that apparently the politician concerned was not called Kenneth even as his middle name so I don't know whether the incident was attributable to drug taking or the like

I didn't know that, Ruddles. Mind you, most of Michael Stipe's lyrics are a bit weird! |

I bought my copy when over in Canada and we put it on in the car, while being driven around in wet weather, reminiscent of the UK!! Why is it always 'What's The Frequency..' that gets played but hardley ever 'Crush With Eyeliner'? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

That track has suffered from being on the Absolute / Radio 2 over-play list (indeed it still seems not to have been deleted from it after some 2-3 years! ) Thus I now turn the sound right down to zero when I hear it's intro. This is not a reflection of my opinion of the artist themselves, merely that radio stations (both BBC & commercial) now don't seem to know when to stop playing certain tracks and move onto other tracks. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

A rarely heard track, only a minor hit in 1986, but a fantastic one all the same.
Forget the mullets - should be played more!

Definitely agree kengeo there were some great songs around that time
I like the 1985 track Duel by Propaganda
There's nothing wrong with mullets either in my opinion _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Sounds like an account of a Me262B-1a/U1 sortie over Germany in April 1945, but they've mixed up the MK103s in the nose with the R4M Orkan unguided missiles - and I'm not entirely sure the "fortresses" actually relates to the B-17 in the context of the song. All things that would go way over the heads of 99.99% of folk who listened to this! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

If I am ever fortunate enough to hear 'Spirits In The Night' or 'Don't Kill It Carol' by Manfred Mann's Earthband, then I'd turn up the volume! There's a lot more to Manfred Mann's Earthband incarnation than that one track! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Radio Caroline has just played the live version of "And You and I" by Yes (from the album Fragile). Not bad for a Sunday morning! The volume was, of course, turned up. |

A lovely choice for Sunday morning, ColinB! Couldn't get on with Nemone playing all this rap stuff on 6 Music, so I put on Planet Rock and they were playing Big Country's 'Chance'....again.
A neighbour next door put 'Fields Of Fire' on pretty loud yesterday! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
