Jeremy Vine was disgussing how safe Qantas safety record is after one of the engine parts of there Airbus A380 fell off whilst in mid air. Airline travel is one of safest ways to travel. We trust those engineers who work through the night to maintain our railways, and hoping one of the trains wheels dosn't fall off. We also trust those people who maintain our roads. If we worried about these things then we wouldn't leave the house.

Statistically air travel might be the safest but if you crash in a plane then unlike a rail road or sea accident you are virtually certain to be dead
There is little chance of survival although I suppose looking on the bright side death would probably be instant
Personally I would rather travel by any means other than air even if it takes longer for the journey

How safe is their safety record? Confused

Actually, Quantas has an impeccable safety record, so what exactly can be drawn from Vine's silly discussion is anybody's guess. These things happen, basically. Anyhow, the plane landed safely, didn't it? What's the problem then?

I love flying. I regularly fly to European destinations and back in a day or for a brief overnight stop. There's no other way I could manage this if I didn't fly.

I feel much safer in a plane at 35,000 feet than I do in a coach or bus. Coach drivers in particular are pretty bad, let's face it.

Cool

I don't like flying; I get very nervous. I know it's irrational, I think it's the sensation of flying, and the waiting around for two or three hours in crowded halls, shopping areas and departure lounges before getting onto the plane, let alone take-off doesn't help.

Despite that, for long distances where you have a choice (eg Europe) I still prefer air travel over road/rail/tunnel/sea, for the statistical safety, comfort and time. What's the point of going abroad for a holiday and having two or more days at either end wasted by travelling?

Despite the proliferation of cut-price airline operations there does not appear to be any major issue over aircraft safety, and when something like this happens the airlines, manufacturers and authorities err on the side of caution and investigate the causes and double-check all similar craft. With everything else that's flying around at the moment it's the least of our worries.

It's the faffing around before take-off that I really hate. Having to get to the airport 2.5hours before a 45-minute flight is such a waste of time.

However, I'm only happy when we're in the air. Years ago I used to stew a lot before take-off, but a while back I was so dog tired during a return trip from Lyon to Gatwick that I was asleep even before take-off and only woke when we were about 20 mins into the flight! The nice thing about that Air France flight is that I checked in late and got upgraded!!

My wife likes us to fly off to holiday destinations because when we're in the air I can't actually do any work................ and that, apparently, is a good thing! Smile

I'm the same, I fly around once a year but it isn't something I enjoy at all I am getting better with age, I only start feeling comfatable when we start decending to land.
although a couple of pints always makes me feel better Wink

back to the thread though if this happened to me no matter how safely we landed I feel I would have to be dragged back on even though it had been fixed

It's not the planes, it's the particular type of Rolls Royce engine being used. To be honest, now is probably the safest time to fly on an A380 because every single RR engine of that type will have been subjected to the most rigorous examination.

I'd get on one today if I'd booked a flight. Unfortunately I haven't... so I can't.

I don't believe it. That engine (which costs millions for each unit) went through the most stringent design and engineering process at Derby and to merely pass it off as a "design" fault can't be right. A faulty component, perhaps.

Laughing I can imagine you explaining that to your next door passenger as the plane hurtled at 600 mph toward the ground.. Laughing

I wouldn't go on one until an answer was found.. particularly as there exists a report to say ( paraphrasing ) the engine was not suitable for the plane! Confused

I'd be a tad more worried if all four engines went simultaneously and there'd be good reason to assume that something wasn't quite right! Smile

The engine was specifically designed for the plane!
