I'd just like to say that since Steve had that 5(?) week holiday recently, the music has been really good on his show.
I have moaned in the past about him playing the same songs all the time but (although he still does that a bit) it has improved greatly.
This last week alone he has played,
J Tull, D Warwick, PHD, E Costello, Isleys, Lovin Spoonful, Byrds, Jon and Vangelis, Supremes, J Cash, Mama Cass, Kid Creole, Shirley Ellis, Talking Heads, Doobies, B Hebb, 4 Seasons, B Streisand, E Clapton, Pretenders, G Gaynor, L Gore, J Taylor, Roger Miller, Stephen Bishop, Simon and Garfunkel, M McCoo and B Davis Junior, J Cliff, Unit 4 + 2, Crosby S+N, White Plains, Led Zepp, Bowie, and C Montez.
*This is not including The Non Stop Oldies*
I really do find that a very good selection of music, and Steves show is virtually the only daytime show where you get to hear any 60s songs (apart from some on CE's show).
I know some of you don't like Steve as a presenter ( I personally think he's great), but I'm talking about the music played not the presenter.

One thing that hasn't changed is the 80s style "zoo" format or the sychophancy of "the crew" around him.

Yeah, fair enough. As a presenter he does my head in, but you're right in that it's the only daytime show that plays 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and naughties music about equally.

I think the only time any good/ slightly different music getrs played on the SW show is the Non Stop Oldies, which are sent in by listeners. Love the show.

Saying that the producer must pick the lists out so someone must have an input.
That's the best you'll get out of me Twisted Evil

That's why I didn't include the oldies in the list, Undiscovered, as I didn't want people to say it was 'cos of the oldies.

I have been listening to his shows on Radio 1 & 2 for the past 20+ years. He's the longest serving afternoon show. Long may he continue at Radio 2.

The best thing on his show is the selection of tracks on the non-non-stop section which sometimes can be good, other times it can be dire

....other than that it's just a formatted routine of re-reading the news, endless boring factiods, pre-recorded interviews, wittering sidekicks etc etc, that just repeats and repeats and repeats day after day Rolling Eyes

It doesn't get on my nerves.

These days, that's all I hope for from R2.

And I'm usually sadly disappointed. Crying or Very sad

Well surprise surprise, I think he's great too! Razz
I don't relate Wrighty to music at all.. in fact I couldn't tell you what type of music he likes but his show is entertaining and after all these years, I still laugh at some of the things he says. I can also put up with his sidekicks.. whereas Evans' lot make me cringe.
I just don't get this 80s throwback stuff.. surely other presenters could be accused of having the same style as they did 20 years ago? Bob Harris, JW, Brian Matthew? in fact, I'd like to hear some of the old stuff back again! Long may he continue... Cool

I've never understood the sycophants jibe aimed at the people who work with Steve or Chris.
I've never heard any of them sucking up to Steve or Chris or saying how fantastic they are at all.
In fact it's quite the opposite as they often make jibes at each other.

Of course they're sycophants. Everything they say and do is designed to please their egocentric hosts.

Well I haven't to listen hard to hear them sucking up to their respective presenters. You only have to listen to the way that Tim Smith laughs at Steve's jokes so enthusiastically. It's forced, to say the least!

Only in a way that pleases the boss. They'll never dare to cross the line.

For the above, read Chris Evans, always has had, always will have. Steve is more than capable of hosting a show on his own (SLS), and a pro to boot.

I do agree about the music, and Steve will be the first to admit that his musical knowledge is a bit lacking, but he does play some good stuff, along with the non stop oldies.

I agree with gazmando, Janie and Tim give as good as they get, Johnny Saunders and Moria Stuart are scared to death to question the almighty one. The Big Show was the only R2 show that I tuned into last week, and as Mark says ......

Nope, I remember him on Radio 1 in the early days (before he did the Breakfast show) and Piccadilly before that. He's always interacted with others, but is more than capable of doing the show on his own.

I cannot help but think that when Wrighty retires from the airwaves (please, God!) it would be an appropriate gesture to buy him a parrot, and teach it to repeat the phrase "Love the show" ad nauseam.

I must agree the music on the SW show is greatly improved recently- must be a new producer?
Sadly, however, the presenter-contributed content is still nauseatingly familiar...

I sooo remember that. I stoped listening when he got all the hangers on. I feel my money is paying for them......so the presenters should have their wages lowered in order to pay the hangers on. Same goes for an certain early morning programm

What they get paid is miniscule compared to what he gets paid for being so irritating.

There's one budget saving I'd make right away!

Loved the oldies on Steve's show today!

Anyone else hear them?

I always enjoy The Steve Wright Show. He's unpretentious and doesn't take things too seriously. Generally he plays much better music than other shows, including much 60s stuff that no one else plays. The Oldies bit is often very good.

However, the non stop oldies today was utterly appalling. It could have been subtitled 'The Worst Of The 80s'. Who was the halfwit member of the public who nominated them? And who was the halfwit producer of the show who chose to play them?

Indeed, why is Radio 2 stuck in the 80s?

I wish it was stuck in the 70s, though there was some dreadful stuff then as well. In fact the 70s probably had more 'rubbish' music than any other decade.

There was some wonderful output in the 80s. I just wish, however, that Radio 2 would play more from other decades.

On a TV show a few years ago where they asked which was the best decade for music, I thought the 60s would win hands down but I amazed myself by leaning toward the 70s... I can't believe I'm saying that now in fact!
But, the "evidence" they used certainly made me think it was pretty good stuff.
However, I'm certainly struggling to watch the current "Top of the Pops" which I think is up to 77 now?? Blimey, it's 80% torture to watch for me! thank goodness for ABBA Razz
I think it must have improved soooo much towards the end of the decade?

I agree with you Schiz, the 80s provided some great stuff and I wish TotPs was featuring that decade instead...

It maybe depands how old you are.

To me the 70s had a lot more variety, changing so much through the decade, (but I agree a lot on naff stuff as well) then there been a slow decline since then into manufactured blandness, well that's what we seem to hear on the radio / TOTP etc.

This may well be the first and last time I say this (and is about Sunday Lovesongs rather than the Big Show) but I think the music on the show this morning has been very good. Is there a different producer today?

The wifi on the internet part of my radio kept cutting out and feeling a bit lazy I couldn't be bothered to go upstairs to re-boot the router while I read the papers, so I flicked over to FM.

It's the first time I've listened to Sunday Love Songs in ages, and I've got to agree with you Essexlady. I can't remember when I last heard Sinatra's 'Love's Been Good To Me', at least 5 years and a few other good ones too.

I think the new sounding of Radio 2 across the whole network has improved recently.

I'd disagree there Mark this was probably just a one off unless the producer has changed.

I don't. It's bland, predictable, the quality of presentation is worse than it's ever been, ,amy shows are full of un-necessary waffle - and the choice of presenters gets worse by the day.

There was a good interview with Moylesy on the Big Show earlier. Is that how to spell Moylesy? Hmmmmm, not sure. Let's run with it for now anyway. Interesting. He seems very happy, and skinny!..... old Kate was right, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Well actually, I'm not so sure. Chocolate Digestives take some beating. Just don't eat the whole packet in one go. Did he answer the big question on the big show... oh yes.

Have you ever interviewed anyone for your job?

Or even "move"? Yes, I agree. I like Moylesy, he's an intelligent guy with an extensive musical knowledge who's not afraid to poke fun at himself and his image. He worked for a while on our local ILR station in Milton Keynes and he was greatly liked by the people who worked with him. I wasn't surprised when he was "promoted" to Radio One

Well I can't stick the man - and to make matters worse he's apparently a Leeds Rhinos fan Evil or Very Mad - but I expect he'll end up on Radio 2 which will cut my listening time down even further - unless of course he does the breakfast show in which case I might listen when Simon Bates is on holiday Laughing
