Now that downloads count from any era is this not the end of the charts.
Surely the Top 40 should reflect the current songs not old downloads that people are claiming as entries.
We could get loads of Marc Bolan songs in a few weeks as his 30th death anniversary approaches.
Then in August it will be 30 years since Elvis died so i dread to think what the top 40 will look like in August/September.
Has the chart as we know it had its day?

Actually I think the charts have improved since the change. We're reverting to a slower chart where singles (or tracks if you prefer) climb to their peak just as they used to, rather than in high one week and out a fortnight later.

The chart should reflect what people are buying regardless of what it is or when it was recorded.

To go back to the original question - it isn't the chart that is in danger of dying - its more likely to be the physical single, as record companies aren't going to go to the expense of releasing a CD when they can get a number 1 from downloads.

HiSshaky...good point re CD singles.
Why pay £2.79 in HMV when you can download at 79p.
My point was 500 people could decide to download Layla for example and it could end up in the top 20.
This maybe popular but it could lead to dozens if not more of songs just for a laugh being downloaded in bulk

It has already happened with Billie's Honey To The Bee!

And in Ireland where the rule was also brought in at the start of the year we have already seen Bohemian Rhapsody back in the chart at 19 and Johnny Cash's Boy Named Sue this week at 28.

To be honest I can't see it happening to the extent some people are predicting. Perhaps in the first few weeks but the novelty will soon wear off.

There should also be the added protection of sales increasing - ie if more sales are counting towards the charts it will take bigger numbers to enter so you're going to need a bigger fanbase to get together to push an oldie in there (mind you if Billie can get to no 17.... Smile )

I think it would be bad for a singles chart to be full of oldies, but I think worries are unfounded. Billie could only manage Number 17 despite a big push, and several other campaigns didn't scrape the Top 200.

As downloads increase, maybe there'll be problems. But I listened to the Top 40 countdown on Sunday and, frankly, things couldn't get much worse!

Especially if it's cheaper to do so. I think the charts have been dead for some time, they just didn't know it. Can't remember the last time I took any interest in what was in the Top 40, nor bought anything from it. I take the point re the death of singles, though - I only buy albums and have only done so for some time, although even now I'd rather buy them from Amazon, CD-Wow or Play since they're so much cheaper than from the High Street.

Shaky...will you join my campaign to get Macarena back in the top 20.
I can get 20 people to download ,so if you get 20 and in turn they get 20 WE COULD DO IT!!!!!!.

Little Jimmy Osmond will be my next campaign after this!!!
