Okay, a thread for those tracks you think that R2 should have had in their more mainstream playlist in the last few years.... say since 2000.
Having a half-hour browse around Youtube tonight, I found these which I'm particularly fond of and although all bar one have featured on Bob Harris's show at least once, IMHO they should have had a wider airplay:
Anne McCue: "I Want You Back", from "Roll" (just happened to be Bob's Album of the Year 2004)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM0pQWFq6pU
plus her "Ballad of an Outlaw Woman"

Gemma Hayes: "Happysad", from "The Roads Don't Love You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6hbPl9dbsE
Gina Villalobos: "What I'd Give", from "Rock 'n' Roll Pony" (look out for the Newcastle landmarks!)

Lamb: "Wonder", from "Darkness and Wonder"

Piney Gir's "Greetings, Salutations, Goodbye", from "Peekahokahoo"

I've heard Bob Harris play Anne McCue and Gina Villalobos. Piney Gir has guested on Mark Radcliffe's show and Bob Harris has played her too.
I will add Drive By Truckers. Has been regularly played by Bob Harris. Played live on Drivetime (Pre 'Ginger Whinger' days) when their most recent album A Blessing & A Curse came out. That's about as far as it went. They deserve more recognition. |

Duke Special - Last Night I nearly died. Heard Jonathan Ross play this back in November, I think and thought it was great - hadn't hear of Duke before. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Quality pop - I was surprised it wasn't a hit, despite not getting much daytime airplay. Follow up "Freewheel" has made the A list - it's a slow burner, not as instant. The video is on youtube - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gja_17zZgZQ _________________ Ron |

Cheers, RocketRon - I'll take a look at that - agree, should have been a hit. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Cherskiy - a good list. What harm would it have done for each of the daytime presenters to have played one of those once in a while?
Piney Gir is championed by one of our friends over on the R2 MBs. Her new album Hold Yer Horses features a re-recorded version of that track. The whole album is very good, countrified but quite varied, less rough round the edges but still sufficiently feisty, samples on her site www.pineygir.com
I have two favourites who I am amazed have not received the airtime (other than Terry Wogan) and success they deserve -
Bic Runga. Her best songs seem to have passed youtube by but from her latest album Birds there's this www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlgi3iA_OWs
Juliet Turner. Albums Burn The Black Suit and Season of the Hurricane are full of good tunes and (sometimes) spiky lyrics, but I've just noticed this beautiful love song "Broken Things" on youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=doL1KxKAzZg _________________ Ron |

Ron, thanks for the support....
I've heard the other version of "Greetings" before and "Hold Yer Horses" is high up on my Amazon wishlist. "Peekahokahoo" certainly has a wide range of styles - from techno (her take on "My Generation" has to be heard to be believed!) through to country - 'feisty' is the word. Everyone I know that's heard "Greetings" loves it yet doesn't really quite know what to make of it in equal measure....
Bic Runga was recommended to me by a friend of mine who's provided me with some great leads over the years, so she's on my Amazon wishlist at the moment - thanks for the link, I'll have a look at that today. Never heard her on TW, though.
As for Juliet Turner, I entirely agree with the two albums you've mentioned, since I have them both! Haven't listened to the latter a great deal yet, but as you say, TW has played both "Take the Money and Run" and "Burn the Black Suit" from the former before - both these and "Dr Fell" would sit well in the normal playlist, IMHO.
Just have had CDs from Lisa Loeb, Heather Eatman and Ana Johnson drop through the letterbox this morning so I'm in for another day of listening to new material.... I know Bob's played tracks from the first two before. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
