| Probably because El Tel has an album of his favourite records coming out, he is appearing as a guest on Ken Bruce's Tracks of my Years slot next week - be nice to hear some Terry and Ken banter again. |

I was rather hoping Wogan would have disappeared by now
Not that his replacement is any better
Why have we never had a decent breakfast show for over 20 years

I just looked for the first time - they're awful! I'm not sure I can believe Wogan chose all these as his very best, Stardust isn't even on there, nor is That'll Do... maybe a copyright issue but still...! |

You need to bear in mind his best was about 1970 so you could look at it in the opposite way

Well, a lot of 'em (eg Brown-Eyed Girl, Have I Told You Lately) are the sort of thing he'd play a lot on his show... but it does seem the sort of collection that could easily induce a coma. |

They're all good tracks, just not all together.
Licensing is surely not such a problem these days - there are only four main "record" companies and they all share material for compilations.
The Killers were always a favourite of his  They're not on. Nor Beth Nielsen Chapman, or a lot of the "new country" artists which Dr Paulie brought to the show.
At least "Young At Heart" has been given a rest.

Yes that's what a lot of them seem to be but as already mentioned Stardust isn't there which is rather surprising given that it's his all time favourite song. |

I guess it's because known "names" give credence to the selection and allow record buyers to trust the choices of music on the disc.
It seems to encourage sales - though I can't understand why. I would never buy such a collection unless it contained some real rarities, and then I'm probably only acquiring it for the sake of one or two pieces that I can't get on the iTunes store. |

What a dreadful collection of songs! Most of them are 'quite nice' in a bland way but really it's just a collection of Sunday morning mush. The only inspiring one is Bobbie Gentry's Ode To Billie Joe.
Why did he have to choose Rod Stewart's appalling version of Have I Told You Lately? And as for If You Leave Me Now and Arthur's Theme!!?? Even Ken Bruce would be embarrassed.
It's a lazy Christmas present bought by lazy people (easy to buy and wrap, no thought required). Wogan's chubby features will help sales but I guarantee that all the charity shops and bargain bins will be overflowing with this dross by January. |

Well I agree that Disc 1 would be an instant Frisbee but Disc 2 isn't soo bad.. particularly these..

It's more than 50 years old (as are the Dean Martin and Sinatra/Crosby numbers, from the same label), so the recording is out of copyright.

My Mum (who died on Aug 23rd) absolutely adored "If You Leave Me Now".
My Dad left us when I was 11 and I can remember my Mum crying to this song a lot, and if I hear the song it brings out a lot of emotions in me. |

For the same reason my wife would, presumably! She likes it. I prefer Van The Man's original, but I've seen Rod perform the song live many times and I certainly wouldn't describe it as "awful". |

yes, it does seem a rather contradictory thing to say but when I hear certain tracks from the 70s it brings back all sorts of memories as it was such a great time for me.
I was involved with a real nice looking blonde girl for most of the early to late 70s ( looked like Agnetha of ABBA I always thought..  ) which had it's high and low points for sure.. splitting up , then getting back together.. but, even at the time, the whole thing had a magic, exciting feeling. This song and David Soul's "Don't Give Up On Us Baby" always remind me of the time and of course. it doesn't hurt so much to listen to them now..
It all ended quite amicably really around 1979.. I remember sitting around my house talking about how we'd grown apart, and my best mate, also present, said after a short lull.. "Maybe it's your hairspray or something".. to which we just fell about laughing!

| Am I wrong in thinking that he was a huge fan of Clifford T. Ward and once said that he would play one of his songs (I think home thoughts from abroad) on his last show? Maybe I am, but I know he didn't and I'm surprised it's not on that album you linked. |

And Katie Melua 'Closest Thing To Crazy', who I think was championed by him. Also Elio Pace, who are his 'house band' on sundays. I doubt he'd have bestowed that honour on Elio & his band if he didn't rate them highly.

did anyone else notice that when Tel and Ken were having their little chat between the two tracks today, Tel said "when they got rid of me from the breakfast show" (paraphrased) "I then asked if I could have a weekend slot" so he didn't ask to leave then
BTW lovely to hear Homethoughts from Abroad (missed Eve Cassidy) again - memories of Pauly Walters and when the breakfast show was good |

I'm guessing licensing difficulties would have prevented Peter Gabriel's 'That'll Do' from being on there.

He was in talks with Lesley Douglas and Bob Shennan about his future before he was kicked off breakfast I think his weekend show gets more hits when listeners watch the live video back. |
