This is very strange and could be a set up? Although I don't think money will be handed over. So much publicty will make these pirates demand a ransom.

Wow, you mean the 'kidnappers' aren't really Somali pirates? First I've heard of that theory Mark, but yes could be they are friends of the couple doing the deed.

I have always thought it odd that they were captured at a point nearer to Seychelles than to Somalia, that is suspicious.

Apparently a leak report to a number of newpapers from a Royal Navy personal said " There unarmed Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, a replenishment tanker was 50 feet away when they saw the couple being taken off their boat by the priates, but they didn't have any snipers on there at the time.

I know that there's no fresh news about this couple, but I can't help thinking about them, particularly at this time of the year. Clearly the British government is pursuing the usual policy of deafing it out, and creating a news blackout, but I just hope that there is some kind of activity behind the scenes in order to bring their ordeal to an end by other means than paying the ransom. This Christmas must have been dreadful for their family.

Discussed on JV show about sending in the SAS. I think that would be a option, but what a hell of a lot of money. They seem to be used now as a ransom or some other deal.

What helluva lot of money Marc? You mean the ransom or the cost of the SAS?

I'm still suspicious, back of my mind it might be a scam. I will apologise profusely if proved wrong Confused

That has crossed my mind too. Something about it just doesn't add up.
I hope I'm wrong, and they are brought home as soon as possible.

Cost using the SAS. I do think it's very suspicious, but who knows accept them, or those who are trying to free them.

I see the Somali pirates have reduced their demands to £2m, in order to cover their costs and expenses (hiring guards, accommodation, food etc.)

Now, you can't say fairer than that, can you? Rolling Eyes

That's because the BBC agreed not to announce it until the couple were out of Somalia for their own safety.

The BBC now claims it was bound by a super injunction from reporting it. As there were reports from Sky, CNN, ABC & loads more this seems a bit lame.

Who paid who? I heard the mayor of the local Somali town saying his local community paid some of the ransom? Yeah right.

Eh??

Toggy, they were a LOT thinner a year ago when they showed doctors in Somalia examining them.

I am suspicious.....the reason.....most people who get released after a long time being captive are a little unkempt....long hair, men have beards. Yes they are thin but they were thin to start with. The woman has very well groomed /cut hair so has the man. Don't tell me there were hair dressers around Rolling Eyes Something is not quite clicking with me

Its not an odd thread dis just one which is realistic where not everyone necessarily believes everything they are fed by our wonderful British media
Personally I think this couple were totally irresponsible by going to an area of the world where they must have known these risks existed resulting in worry and distress being caused to their families at home and giving the British Government a major problem
I have very little sympathy for them
No doubt they will now make a small fortune by exploiting their own stupidity and producing a best selling book whilst the rest of the nation are losing their jobs and having their benefits cut which just proves what an upside down world we now live in
This couple should be summoned to the Foreign Office on their return and be given a good dressing down and told to go away and keep a low profile
I for one am already fed up of hearing about them

Me too Ruddles, i.e. hearing about them and the fact it was a well known 'no-go' area for sailing.

The entire world is a dangerous place though. There’s pirates in Penzance! You can always say well they shouldn’t have gone on the road, she shouldn’t have worn that short skirt, well if he will go mountain climbing……

I’m a bit flummoxed by this thread, it seems so…… well, to put it bluntly, nasty. Sad

If people stayed where they knew it was safe we'd have never left our shores all those hundreds of years ago.

I have a fair bit of sympathy for these couple I don't suppose how well they were looked after did they think it was home or that they could leave.

In the same way the McCanns shouldn't have left the room that night but you cannot be unsympathetic to them losing their child? or can you ?
Well they have signed a new book deal

The fact that, putting it bluntly, most of us thought they should have known better. They don't seem to have had much common sense.

A good friend of mine stayed at the same complex as the McCanns about 12 years ago when her children were younger. She went back at the beginning of September with them (18 and 21 now) and they stayed at the same place. On their way back to their rooms one evening someone jumped out of the gardens and really freaked her daughter. My friend said there was just a strange feeling about the whole place and was glad she had the kids with her as she wouldn't have felt comfortable being there on her own.

I hear what you're saying dis but when people take stupid risks being fully aware of what they are doing that is a lot different from ordinary risks in day to day life
Yes if you go out on a road there is a chance you could be killed or injured but Britain has the safest roads in Europe if not the World so the risk is minimal
If on the other hand you deliberately go to an area of the world where numerous kidnappings and interceptions of shipping have already taken place and there has been a warning from the Government advising people not to go there then frankly you are an idiot who should not expect either sympathy or the British Government or armed forces to bust a gut to get you out of your own self created mess
It is like when some foolish people choose to go mountain climbing or walking with inadequate equipment in mid winter freezing blizard conditions and then get into difficulty and expect the air sea rescue to come to their aid whatever the expense involved
Whatever happened to the concept of common sense and responsibility in this country?
Such people do not deserve sympathy and to point out this fact does not make a person nasty
I have the greatest sympathy for genuinely unfortunate people who are in difficulty through no fault of their own but some people here really do need to get real
