I can't recall who the trailer was for, but in it the presenter commented that doing a music show on radio was simple "It's just playing records & talkin g in between"
Whoever it was, he got it spot on! Too many Radio 2 dj's forget that all important criteria about what they do.
They think they are commedians
1)They are not
2)People mostly tune into music radio primarily to hear the music

Not some dj constantly clowning about

It is mainly about the music, Clive but I’ve listened to one of those stations that plays just music- no or very little talking at all and it doesn’t really work- there’s no life in it, no buzz, no heartbeat, no soul, no depth, no sense of purpose. So for me the talking adds something that isn’t really definable, it just works. That something is probably different for everyone: which is why DJs can be very popular with some and not so with others. For me, with some DJs, it’s like a good friend has come round to your house to have a good natter, play some music and throw each around the kitchen, other DJs are like having your in-laws round for Christmas dinner, it’s kind of ok, a bit stiff, a bit formal, a bit be careful what you say, and you’re quite pleased to shut the door after they’ve left, and it always seems like they had a much better time than you did. Everyone is different! Smile

I've been listening to good old Radio Caroline lately - especially over the weekend when Radio 2 is so bad - and there's a lot of good music with talking in between. The chat from presenters is never rambling, always adds context to the music and I often learn things about the artists and music that I never knew before.

It can be done. It's just that Mr. Shennan doesn't think it's important with Radio 2.

I listen to it mainly via the Caroline App on my iPhone (which I usually via my WiFi router at home and 3G when I'm on the move), but you can listen to it online or on Sky channel 0199.

Info: http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk

The station is maintained / staffed entirely by volunteers, with most of its revenue coming from subscriptions and donations.

Rachel, I agree with what you say to a certain extent.
I just find that with some DJ's, like Ken Bruce, they imagine they are the greatest commedians in the world & everyone is interersted in them, not the music.
I am enjoying the KB show a bit more now, but I still feel he tries too hard & goes OTT with his "comedy" bits. It is getting the ballance just right.

It can never get as bad as some of the Pirates, tho! As I listen on DAB I don't come across pirate radio much but I recall years ago listening to them... some of those DJ's just never stopped nattering, "We've got a really wicked track comming up now, big shout out to the sarf london possee... real.ly wicked track.. big shout out to.." & so on. Never got to hear the "really wicked track!" Surprised

I don’t really get that with Ken Bruce, Clive. He’s not top of my team sheet in the DJ world but I do listen to his show most days. Funny is not how I would describe him: does he attempt to be funny? If so it’s over my head: he’s more playful and teasing than he is funny, to me. Smile

Thankfully Radio Caroline is no longer a pirate broadcaster! And even when it was (the first in the UK) is was a whole lot better than the junk that infests the airwaves in some of our major cities.

Ken Bruce has always lived in Terry Wogan's shadow, rather; a funny man or comedian he is not. Like TW, he has a quick wit and is best at the wry observation; the delivery is different, and that can sometimes make the humour sound forced.

I find the talking OVER the most irritating thing. I don't listen to R2 much these days but sometimes get to hear Tony Blackburn on a Saturday - Oh dear - it's really good to hear some of the old chart music but at least Dale didn't talk over the beginning and end of "this is one of the best, one of my favourite etc., etc.,"

Why can't we just be allowed to listen to the music without the constant yapping over it? Evil or Very Mad

I really like the progs Carrin gton & Jacobs do. But Jacobs is being sidelined with an 11PM slot & both Carrington & Jacobs are getting on
Once they are no longer broadcasting, who will there be to take their place for that kind ofd radio show?

Are Radcliffe and Maconie guilty of “talking over records”? I don't know as I never listen to them.

Perhaps all the evening programmes are for people who actually listen closely to music and like to know the background to the performers, composers etc.

It's unthinkable that Radio 2 would make ever make evening listening sound like the current daytime output. It would be a step too far and there would be a revolution with me in the front line (a very long front line as I'd be joined by many others!)

I'm afraid with a few exceptions, I prefer listening to "non-stop" music of the kind I like or, fancy listening to at the time. Internet radio is the answer for me now. No emails, texts, fellow Radio 2 member butt kissing, X Factor garbage or celebrity "news"... I can do without it all... Just great music! Razz

I'm the same, R2 do have a better range of music than most and no adverts but the ipod adapter is coming for christmas not sure i'll ever need a radio again, except a bit of R3 when I'm having a bad day

I agree Rachel. I've tried several internet stations that have very little input from DJs and you could be thinking you were in outerspace after not very long! If I've forgotten to set my radio to record the Early Breakfast I fall back on it but I prefer someone chirping away a bit in the background so I know the world hasn't ended overnight!

Talking over the end of records IMHO is the worst crime a presenter can commit. It shows complete disrespect towards the artist and to the listener. These people must realise that if it wasn't for the artists/singers, the egomaniacs would have to find a proper job.The music is far more important than any broadcaster.
The worst culprit was of course the Ginger Maniac.
I say 'was' because I think he's improved a bit recently. I remember on Drivetime a few years ago he said he'd been warned about talking over songs (but then promptly talked over the next one he played). Vine and Wright are just as guilty.

However, I also agree with the above posts which say that a presenter, even a talkative one, is better than just non stop music. A show needs a presenter to add his/her personality to the show.

All the above posts confirm to me that Radio Caroline is bang on the button - they've got exactly the right mix. Funny how a station started on Easter Sunday 1964 is now setting a new (old) standard!!! Smile

Colin, I was looking to see if Radio Caroline have a web-forum and they do! yay!

Here is the link- seems like a popular place. Smile

http://www.daparr.co.uk/radiocarolineforum/index.html

Thinking about joining it myself- are their radio shows as good as the forum? Wink

Today's track of the day is especially for you, Clive Smile enjoy. I won't talk over it.

Didn't know there ever was a forum! (And anyhow, whose was it - it evidently had nothing to do with the station).

As for the broadcasts, they're definitely better than much of R2's dire output - I can listen for a whole day without uttering expletives in the way I do when listening to R2's second-rate presenters (which are now in the majority, let's face it).

The trouble with most forum software applications is that they're not Smartphone-friendly, and that's why newer social media forms have largely replaced forums as the primary form of online contact for people with shared interests.

The Caroline iPhone app really is very good - I'm pleased to see these truly independent broadcasters finding their way in the new media world at a time when the BBC and the like seem to have lost their way.

What I'm also impressed with is the fact that I can now listen to 3G-streamed stations in the car thanks to an iPod or phone and a Belkin iTrip FM sender or the like. That means that we can listen to the many, many alternatives to boring R2 without having to endure egos getting in the way of decent music. Unfortunately, Radio 2 is full of egos who insist on getting in the way of the (often variable quality) music!

Most can be made Smartphone friendly by installing a plugin and requiring the Smartphone user to run a specific client. There's a piece of software called Tapatalk that does just this, but there's probably others.

You can't run Tapatalk here as it requires version 3 of phpBB, whilst this site is still running version 2.

Yes, I've heard of that. I run a couple of phpBB3 forums and one of my users has suggested this but, as forum traffic is dwindling these days (in general as well as mine!), I decided not to bother installing the server-side stuff.

I do have run a handful of Wordpress 3.0 sites, though, and I find the installation of the wptouch plugin really useful in that it automatically formats an iPhone/Android version of the site automatically to smartphone users. It also makes the commenting system easy to use on an iPhone or similar - and it's great on iPads.

Of course, John can't install Tapatalk here because he's using a third-party provider who is the server admin.

Schizoidman, did you see the Chris Evans sketch on the Impressions show?

Allegedly, he needs decaffinated coffee (so the sketch had it) to get through the programmes. Instead, the usual was given and Evans just spouted off throughout until an engineer injected him with a tranquillizer!

I can believe it!
