........ I was listening to Schubert's Fifth Symphony whilst out driving in the lovely sunshine this morning. It's one of my most favourite ever pieces of music. Wonderful and uplifting. Marvellous.

And I don't care if I looked a complete pillock as I conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra whilst waiting at the traffic lights.

Elgar's Cello Concerto and Enigma Variations have the same effect on me

Superbly Uplifting

Yes, I particularly love Enigma Variations. It first hit me hard when I was involved in a training film for The Royal Ballet, some of which was shot at the rehearsal studios at Covent Garden. We observed a whole dance being choreographed from its early beginnings over a period of several days - all to the live piano accompaniment of Enigma Variations Movement 9 (Nimrod) and 10 (Dorabella) and I fell in love with Elgar there and then.

A couple of weeks later we went back to record the full dress rehearsals (complete with orchestra) on stage at the Royal Opera House (the old building) and on hearing the full pieces in all their glory made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! I'd never experienced sound like it.

More recently, I attended the funeral of a friend who requested Movement 10 to be played and it made for a very happy/sad emotion.

I try to listen to the adagio from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez at leats once a week, inspiring piece of music along with the others mentioned

Adagio
featuring the great John Williams

What a fabulous setting for the performance! Every time we go out to Andalucia I promise myself a visit to the Alhambra Palace and never have I managed to get up to Granada (mostly because I adopt a lazy stance and can't be bothered to do the drive). I hear you have to book in advance as it's such a tourist attraction. Maybe next time!
