Whistle-blowing website Wikileaks has released 250,000 secret messages sent by US embassies which give an insight into current American global concerns.

___________

This could compromise US relations with countries like Iran. Apparently the wikileaks website was under attack by hackers.

I think "hackers" is an understatement. This DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is more likely to have been instigated by the CIA.

Wikileaks are grossly irresponsible. The US should hand the guy at the head of it over to the saudi's
The main "news" from the leaks that Arab countries urged the US to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities is hardly a surprise.
Arab countries, along with Israel, have been worried about growing Iranian-Syrian hegemony in the region. They have a far better grasp on the threat Iran poses than Western leaders like Obama & Cameron who are really clueless when it comes to the polotics of the region.
It is also no secret that leadin g Arab diplomats were urging Israel to see the fight against Hizbollah through to the end "& finish them off" during the last Lebanon war. Had Arab opinion held more sway over Israel, that war would not have ended before Hizbollah was wiped out & Iranian-Syrian domination of Lebanon ended.
Furthermore, if Arab opinion held sway, the US would already have entered into military action against Iran.

Back to the leaks. The Taliban are studying them for the names of Afghanis who have worked with gthe Allies there. It is estimated that atr least half a dozen people who worked with the Afghan govt & US against the Taliban were killed as a result of the last Wiki leaks

Er, excuse me Mr. President, but perhaps you need to be informed that the proverbial horse has now bolted.

Perhaps we should have been doing all this before, Mr. President?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11868838

So, the US Government is now thinking of tightening its security. Well how about that for Rocket Science, folks!!!!!!

Looks like WikiLeaks has already served a useful purpose - which was its aim in the first place, no doubt. Power to their elbow, I say. If it highlights the stupidity of those who should know better then perhaps it's just what the doctor ordered.

The funny thing is I saw that Julian Paul Assange, head of Wikkileaks, has "taken refuge" in Jordan!
If he has any sense, he will hightail it to Washington & ask to be sent to Guantanamo! That would be an easy ride compared to what various groups in the mid east have in mind for him

I thought it funny that Mr. Angry from Tunbridge Wells was calling (on JV's lunchtime show) for Wikileaks (the website) to be closed. I don't think they quite understand how cleverly the Wikileaks server system has been set up. Not only does Assange move from one country to another but the website is served from hardware that's cleverly distributed around the world in such a way that it just can't be easily "closed down".

Which is precsiely why the stupid authorities are now up in arms.

Moral to the story: SHUT THE BLOODY GATE FIRST, YOU MORONS! Or, to put it another way, don't blame the messenger........

I found it rather odd that Julian Assange's lawyer was a UK guy, Mark(?) Stevens who featured on the Jimmy Young Show as one of the 'Legal Guys' who were on every week and somehow was dropped not long after JV took over.

Interestingly I had a call from my expat (11years) friend in Texas at just after 8am their time today and she had not heard anything of the Wikileaks. Shocked The whole time we talked, over half an hour, she said the TV was showing William and Kate and gave the breaking headline 'Charles defers to William'. She said did I know anything about that? To which I said it's always cropping up but nothing had happened today.

Covering up embarrassing news by any chance?

Helen, I heard that rumour as well (about Charles stepping aside to allow Big Willy to succeed to the throne) but not a sniff over here. Very odd.

Doesn't the British media work in mysterious ways?

I wonder why.................................. Rolling Eyes

Gordon Brown asked the US if Gary McKinnon who was found quilty of computing hacking if he could stay in the UK to serve his jail sentence. This request was turned down whilst he was Prime Minister. Gary McKinnon could face upto 60 Years in a US jail for hacking into military files.

---------

I think we knew of this when Mr Brown was PM.

I'm sorry if I'm being stupid but at my age...

What i don't understand is why is it that anything on Wikipedia is treated as unproven but anything on Wikipedia is treated as though it's been carved on stone tablets

WikiPedia is completely unlinked. The "whistlebowing" site we're talking about here is "WikiLeaks".

Thanks Colin. Told you I was being stupid.

I suppose I just assumed that they were connected because of the similarity in names

The wikileaks co founder Julian Assange swiss bank accounts have been frozen, as a European arrest warrant for his arrest has been issued. He's apparently in secret hidding somewhere in the UK.

I don't think its really that secret Mark

Apparently the police know where he is

If he gets arrested its likely he will appeal against extradition so he will probably be out on bail until the appeal hearing which could take some time
That is if he doesn't do a runner although they may take away his passport but technically with ID he can still go to another EU country

I see the CIA is gradually strangling him. First, he is accused of "sexual assault" by two women back in Sweden (yet they have been really slow to act on arrest warrants). Then his web registrar refuse to forward DNS addresses to his primary web server. Now his bank accounts are frozen in Switzerland.

Funny eh?

The funniest thing of all is that it just won't stop the leaks. The web hosting is distributed all over the world - because they planned for all of this happening.

The guy is a fool! First place he headed to to evade capture was Jordan! A Jordanian official took him aside & told him bluntly: "There are MANY people here who want you dead. If you value your life, leave!"
He did & came to the UK
He was planning to seek asylum in Iran (!!!) but then Iran called the leaks a "Zionist Imperialist plot" & he realized he would be better off under the tender mercies of western law enforcement.
