What films have really scared you?

There aren't that many films nowadays that scare me too much... The Exorcist sure did even though I put on a brave face at the time, but the last film I saw (on TV ) which did "stay with me" for weeks was "the Grudge"
There were elements of that film I didn't like, one of which was the security camera picking up the evil spirit in the office corridor.
I wouldn't have cameras in my house.. just in case they picked up something I didn't like! Confused

For me it was "The Haunting of Hill House".

And there was another one, black and white, but can't remember the name. It was something about a curse, and I remember a scene where a guy was running through a forest with a ball of light rushing after him. The final scene, where the villain was on a train, supposedly escaping, and a gust of wind blew a piece of paper in through the window and this piece of paper was the carrier of the curse. Ring any bells with anyone?

In both these films you never actually saw anything gruesome and for me, films that are not explicitly creepy are much more frightening than all the revolving heads in the world.

You are on about 'Night of the demon' it was based on an M.R. James story, there is a bit of dialogue when the man is being chased at the start which was sampled for a Kate Bush track 'hounds of love' the line goes 'its in the trees' -cracking film scared me as a kid. Scariest film i have ever seen is similar to yours 'The Haunting' black and white again i like the oldies Very Happy

The Exorcist gave me a sweaty nightmare so I guess that must have scared me the most.

But I recall one time at the cinema when I screamed out loud and cried, and it was a scene where a man came into a room and behind the door there was a gorilla and the gorilla put a waste paper bin over the man's head, that made me scream out loud and I cried. My sister says I was 4 at the time.

Whilst not the scariest film ever made, my wife and I sat down and watched a film called "The Strangers" on the Sc-Fi Channel last night.

My wife was jumping around all over the place during the film which made me twitchy to say the least.

Has anyone else seen this film-if not, and you like horror films this is a good one.

One that gave me the heebbie geebies was The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis and a brilliant young boy actor Haley Joel Osment.

The ending was kind of obvious but even so ... a very spooky film Shocked

THere's a couple

The Blair Witch -I know it's shakey and a bit nothingy(might not be a real word) but the end scene had my stomach in knots the first time I'd seen a film that has made me feel sick.

The Ring - to be honest the US version isn't bad but the japanese version is just bloody horrible the tv scene, not nice

I loved the Hellraiser series, Cronenberg must have been a huge inspiration to Del Torro Cronos could have been made by Cronenberg

Night of the Hunter starring Robert Mitchum directed by Charles Laughton (the only film Laughton directed, unfortunately).

Mitchum plays a killer in pursuit of the two young children who he believes know the whereabouts of a stash of money which he and their deceased father stole. It is extremely creepy. Mitchum worms his way into their mother's affection for a while, moves in with them and is brutal towards her and the children.

They run away and there are haunting scenes during his relentless pursuit of them. It was filmed in black and white which adds to the atmosphere.

Is that the film where Mitchum plays the part a Preacher? I'm sure I saw that many years ago and it has a shot of a dead blonde female sitting in a car underwater with her hair flowing in the tide... creeeepy!
I didn't like it and I'll never forget that scene either.. Confused
