Hi,

There is a way you can stop other people from looking at this message board without registering as you have to sign in first. I think it would be a good idea for this to happen and it will stop people from BBC Radio 2 looking at this private message board.

Mark, Thanks for the suggestion,

This will need some discussion. But in my mind, the only way to keep this board running, for now at least, is by running openly.

On my todo list today is sorting out so that the public can view, but not contribute to this board. I may even need to delve deeper into hiding some threads from the public altogether though.

I have access to IP addresses of even guest posters, so any funny business will not be tolerated.

For what it's worth I think closing the general threads to public view is a mistake because you will never attract new members and grow if you do that. Then the forum will become stale.

You can hide specific forums quite easily if you go into advanced mod on the forum admin controls and select REG rather than ALL.

I've done this with only one board on our forum which is XXX adult stuff only and unmoderated. So it doesn't show unless you are a member.

One of the reasons the BBC gave for deleting one of my links was that their policy was not to allow links to boards that were not on public view. Of course it was wrong in the case of our board but I can see their point if it were to be a closed forum.

If you become a closed shop then the board will eventually die away IMO. But obviously it's your decision.

Best Wishes

PS We have also run with the policy that EVERYONE is welcome despite what you might thnk without the "perceived" troublemakers again it could become dull.

What we will not be tolerating is any kind of personal abuse etc. but apart from that we intend to be pretty liberal in what people can say and do. With the community making the decisions rather than admin/mods.

Whether it will work or not remains to be seen.

So what is to stop “these Radio 2 people” registering on this site using any alias of their choosing?

Anyway, I thought the idea was for us to produce feedback for the program makers in the hope they may take notice and join us.

We will not do that if we create artificial barriers to their participation.

I disagree Mark, it's nothing short of madness to stop people from just looking. Shops would never work if that was the case. I do though, think that, if it's possible, people should have to register before being able to post, other wise you get drive by shooting. Smile

Hi guys,

Thanks for the thread. Cool

I quite agree with you Rachel, unless people can look at the goods, they aren't going to want to walk in the shop.

As it stands, people that havent registered CANNOT post on the forum, excpet for the pre welcome mat thread, which is aimed at being there to help unregistered users register.

Admin I agree with what you say, Rachel's post is more or less what I said, which is why we've set up as we have. One thing though, if you leave the board open 24/7 and people can post to even one area without registering you could end up with a load of abuse on waking in the morning. I also make it admin only registration after 11pm.

You could just have a facility where they could email the forum if they were encountering problems in registering?

Are you putting in place procedures to back the system up and make it more secure from hackers etc.? With phpBB forums being so vulnerable? After the BBC Login (ironically the one they used to announce the closures) being hacked a couple of weeks ago, makes you think eh?

Best wishes.

Hey BDG,

I have to admit, I had thought about backing up, but after some looking, hadn't worked out how. Definately something I have to look into in the near future though.

I definately know what you are saying with the guest thread, but thankfully when we are up and running I will be removing that.

Can I ask you a question BDG, did you have problems with users confirmation E-Mails like we had? Although I suspect it is a case of the emails being Junk Mailed.

I think you can hide parts of the message board where you have to log in too. TV heaven do this on their forum for the spoiler section..

Admin

A couple but not many I just go in and activate them manually if there is a problem and they declare who they are. Plus I go through new arrivals in the morning and check their status and through the day.

I've had a poster this monring who is trying to get in here and can't register so I've directed her to your guest thread.

Hopefully you will be able to do the same if the problem occurs the other way around?

It maybe worth considering changing the status to "none" to get as many in in the last few hours. You still get their email addy anyway you can always do an email out afterwards to get people to confirm.

Catch you later.

Can I just also say that Mark O you really are not helping the situation on the old R2 N&CA board by posting new threads and driving the links down for people to see to make the jump across. Why are you doing this?

We certainly haven't done it on the S&M board. I suggest you all work hard keeping the links up for the last few remaining hours.

Thank you.

Hi BDG,

I'm glad it's not just our forum having a few teething troubles. Cool

If we have any users having problems with your site, I would be more than happy to point them in the right direction, or even talk to you about it. We are afterall a single community, split into two of course. Very Happy

We are still having issues with signups, even though I set the status to 'none' we had a sign up who's account wasn't activated and couln't log in. So I've had to set it back to e-Mail activation. Grrrrrrr.

Thanks for the help, support and suggestions over the past few days BDG, it's been a great help. Damnit, there are no emoticons for a kiss here yet... oh well, something else to do. Cool

When I started my site, I had the same problems. I went on to manual activation for a while (which meant some people had to wait as I was unavailable), but I resorted to auto and it seems to work now! One of the problems is that the host have umpteen boards, all taking up bandwidth, so sometimes things get a bit behind!

Cheers for that WD,

I hope it will sort itself out in the end. Tommorow might be a bit of trouble, I'm going to be offline for pretty much most of the day and night, and will probably only get back on wednesday morning.

Fingers crossed the EMails work by then. Shocked

Admin Shame Mark couldn't read this thread because he has been spoiling all over the N&CA board tonight grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I've told him on the board, I think he's doing you no good at all by doing that especially after the polite request here today.

I totally agree with you Admin we are a community split in three and it is pointless to make it into a competition we need to work together. Plus we've had a load of spoilers from folk and accoustic as well trying to drive the links down. What a carry on eh?

Team work is what we need and I think Woodysdad has been fantastic in it all......just wanted to put that on record.

Smileys are easy to add on just select the extra options they should be there somewhere Smile

I don't think we're in competiton...our board is different from this board is different from BDGs board...we can all get along together. The one thing that is important is that we have no 3 minute delay, ridiculous modding, and the ability to sort out the trolls. Plus, we're all learning as we go. By the way, for smilies, there's a great site, http://bestsmileys.com/, where you pick the caregory, highlight it, copy, then paste in your message.Like so

I hope we can all work together.

Except that many IP addresses are assigned dynamically, so banning a specific IP won't always work since it's changed the next time the user accesses the internet. And then, of course, there are the Open Proxy visitors who can bypass the registration process!

Hey Ella,

Yep, if people want to go to the effort of causing trouble, undoubtedly they always will. There's only so much people can do to try and stop it, and after a while the only option is to close the boards down. (Like Radio 2.)

Yep. It's only when you run a board (or boards) that you get to see what the real problems are. I can understand why the BBC is clamping down on its boards, and the higher the website's profile the more problems exist with maintaining the boards (not just from the point of view of nutters who post all the time but the major security issues affecting them).

I believe the BBC pulled the Radio 2 and Radio 5 Live boards because they were full of criticisms towards the presenters and station bosses. Obviously, they cannot accept negativity. Methinks Lesley Douglas was getting rather hacked off with her decision making being ridiculed on the message board. Rolling Eyes
