It's certainly different and probably popular with cider drinkers all over Britain
It seems they've done an Oasis cover as well

The original Wurzels were fabulous when fronted by the man himself Adge Cutler but pretty average after his untimely death in the 1970s. After that, the band became little more than a parody of themselves - embarrassing, too.

They used to do scrumpy-dances around Devon it their heyday and the gigs were superb. The resulting hangovers weren't, though.

Anyway - great covers:

The Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends" - Joe Cocker
Elton John's "Border Song" - Eric Clapton
Paul Simon's "Something So Right" - Annie Lennox

Yes Colin it's nice to be reminded of the late and great Adge Cutler
I remember watching a documentary about The Wurzels a couple of years ago and included was a shot of the location where he had his accident and apparently there were a very large number of complaints that no plaque had been erected to mark the spot
He clearly had a massive following in the West Country and seemed a larger than life character and thoroughly nice guy
As you say after he passed away it was all downhill but I bet The Wurzels still sound OK after five pints of Scumpy!!

my favorite covers are
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt - Johnny Cash
Beegees - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - Al Green
Destiny's Child - Independant Women - Elbow
Leonard Cohen - Halleluyah - Jeff Buckely

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMUTiASn2B8

Worse ones

Ash - Shining Light - Annie Lennox
Procul Harem - Whiter Shade of Pale - Annie Lennox (nothing personal love)
Leonard Cohen - Halleluyah - whichever x factor dross attempted it

Oh how I agree about Halleluyah. I think it was Alexandra (Burke?) who covered it. I had to turn the radio off every time it was played. It is one of my favourite songs and she "sang" it without even a glimmer of understanding what it was about. Absolutely dreadful! I also agree with you about Jeff Buckley's version - wonderful.

I've always liked this version of 'Needles & Pins' by Smokie better than the regularly heard Searchers take on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1N8vyaYNbM
I mentioned Neil Young's unique take of 'On Broadway' on another thread. It took me a few listens before I decided that it did work for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Uw5QoMmH1g
This is Tom Petty doing his song 'Room At The Top' from his album Echo Not one his most well known albums, though Bob Harris has played a track or two from it occasionally. I like the album and this track, though there are no police sirens on my copy of the album! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQFCF9KESic&ob=av2e
I just love Eve Selis' version of the same track, from her album Nothing But The Truth. Why is this great singer heard so little on UK radio? http://www.eveselis.com/music/nbtt.php Click track 12, though you can hear the whole album if you want to! I saw her live at Guildfest one year, she was brilliant.

Hi RuddlesCat: as we discussed a week or two ago, Bowie's version of Let's Spend... is particularly good. A good punk song four years before punk was invented?
At the risk of losing all credibility in only my second posting here, I quite liked Madonna's American Pie! Not as good as the original of course.

Billy Paul's cover of Your Song was brilliant--funk, soul, jazz, everything.
And the obvious ones: Hendrix' Watchtower, Cocker's With A little Help etc. Again, the originals were all good as well.

Worst covers? anything by Phil Collins. The Stones' cover of Like A Rolling Stone by Dylan, the best song ever. And I think it was the Stereophonics who did an appalling cover of Creedence's sublime Who'll Stop The Rain.

I think that Tiffany did quite a reasonable version of I Think we're Alone Now in 1988 the original having been done by Tommy James and the Chandelles
The later Girls Aloud version was dreadful
Talking of Tommy James Joan Jet did a very good version of Concrete and Clover in the 80s
Both were almost as good as the originals

Ruddles: it was Tommy James and The Shondells!

And it was Crimson And Clover! (not Concrete And Clay!)

Schiz of course you're right
I told you I wasn't very good at spelling
Actually I meant to say Crimson and Clover not Concrete and Clover as I originally said in error
It must be getting past my bedtime
Either that or I've inadvertently lost part of my brain!

I agree about Alexandra Burke murdering Hallelujah - not a patch on John Cale's or Jeff Buckley's versions!

Annie Lennox took all the feeling out of Ash's Shining Light and turned it into bland mush of the kind Radio Leeds play on Sundays when they want to be religious.

Phil Collins's version of Tears Of A Clown is nowhere near as good as The Beat's version of this Smokey Robinson classic.

I heard Robson & Jerome's attempt at Up On The Roof in a shop somewhere - it's nowhere near as good as Laura Nyro's on the CD reissue of 'Christmas & The Beads Of Sweat', where, after the traumas expressed on the song 'Been On A Train' (about a fellow passenger who overdoses), she bloody well deserves to go on that roof and let her troubles go!

There's a sudden glut of whole albums of cover versions by people who really should know better.

Phil Collins admitted on Monday night's One Show that he hadn't written any new material for ten years because he didn't have anything to say. So instead he foists a third-rate Motown covers CD on the world.

Rod Stewart's was no better, but at least he seems to have given up, for now, murdering the great American popular songbook.

Who else have we had? Seal, taking some Ray Charles and soul classics to the cleaners, Brian Wilson taking on Gershwin - I just can't get the Beach Boys out of my head, but he no longer sounds like them. Bryan Ferry taking another swipe at Bob Dylan and managing to sound worse; now that is an achievement.

Santana's latest is an assault on what you might think is the indestructable - classic rock like Whole Lotta Love, Back In Black and Smoke On The Water - but it's a total mess. Neil Diamond's new CD, as yet no detail, is apparently also a classic rock cover set. Gawd help us Rolling Eyes

What about a cover of a cover? Will Young's pitiful, note for note copy of Jose Feliciano's version of "Light my Fire".
They chickened out of the guitar solo, though!

I think it's the state of the music / entertainment industry and easy money to be made. The majority of the public don't seem to help when all they seem to want is X-factor etc which is just some people singing copies of old songs, and not that well most of the time, nothing new about it. Thanks to Simon Cowell, popular music is nothing but a factory-produced process, so it's not surprising that the record publishers (who, in the UK, are closely associated with Cowell anyhow) will go for the quick buck by simply regurgitating back catalogue material. It's less risky and it means that the whole industry can continue to be lazy.

And then they moan that people aren't music in traditional outlets like they used to!

The Desperate Contractual Obligation Album, as I'll call it, usually occurs in the run-up to Christmas, as in the cases of the Collins and Stewart albums! And I liked Genesis earlier.

Not sure Cowell started it PWL were doing it all the way through the 80's but I agree he's the main culpret nowadays.
was forced to watch some of his x doctor earlier. It grates me to here him say that these kids sound dull of samey, when all he does with the winner is put some bland cover out, as you say being lazy. I watched SC being criticised by the ed of NME his defence was that the nme just wanted us to listen to music that was the same, of whiich I thought was rich. Another reason to not watch ITV imo

What do people think of these takes on big hits of their time? A no 1 in the case of this, by 'Yin & Yan': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ5AdFDtbZU
And this doo-wop cover of a famous Springsteen number by 'Big Daddy': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG7nj9s96TY
Is it a case of so bad they're good? What do others think?

As a one-off, poking some innocent fun at Telly Savalas' Kojak job on the frankly sickly-sweet song by Bread/David Gates, I liked Yin and Yan. Rosko looked as though someone was pulling his string in that clip! Laughing

I loved Big Daddy as well. Part serious, part tongue-in-cheek do-wop interpolations of Madonna, Barry Manilow, Springsteen - and the whole Sgt Pepper album.

Lord Evan Elpus, thank you so much for the link to Yin & Yan's 'If'!

I'd been listening to Johnnie Walker on the I-player at the time and he had The Sound Of Bread as the featured album, and I thought - 'if he plays the original of If I will be thinking of Yin & Yan's version all the way through!'

You're welcome aviddiva.
Here's another classic song cover. George Harrison doing 'True Love'. As I remember, it sank without trace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc01zF6DYXs&feature=related While the UK had 'True Love'. I've always preferred this one which Canada & America had instead. 'Crackerbox Palace': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc01zF6DYXs&feature=related

I've not heard The Corrs' 'Ruby Tuesday'. I do like most of their covers though.
I prefer Melanie's version of the song to The Stones' original. 'Rubaay Tuesdaaay'.
