Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick has been charged after two brothers died in a crash on the M6.
Arron and Ben Peak, aged 10 and eight from the Manchester area, died when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed with a Range Rover in Staffordshire.
Mr McCormick has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, having excess alcohol in his blood and driving with no insurance.
The boys' mother, Amanda Peak, said their lives had been "devastated".
The boys' 37-year-old father is in hospital in a serious condition with fractures to his neck and back.
He was driving the Toyota Previa people carrier when the crash happened between junctions 15 and 16 of the southbound motorway near Keele services at shortly before 0545 BST on Saturday.
Mr McCormick will appear before Fenton magistrates at 10am on Monday.

What a tragedy he has brought on the family. This is the second such incident involving a local footballer. Six years ago, soon after leaving Coventry, Lee Hughes killed a driver near Meriden, Warwickshire, he got 5 years jail made worse because he left the scene.
This latest incident is also close to home as McCormick is known by both my son and my daughter's partner. My son knew him as a teenager in the Coventry amateur youth leagues, and my daughter's partner who is professional played with him when he was on loan to his club, before he signed for Plymouth.
McCormick seemed keen to get home, driving at 6am after a night out, plain stupid. |
