It seems the place not to be in the UK is Middlesbrough, after the city topped a poll of the worst places to live.

The city has been given the undesirable title because of high crime levels, severe drug and health problems, and poor education results.

Researchers ranked the best and worst UK places for the Channel 4 show Location, Location, Location.

Hull is second in the list, followed by the borough of Newham in east London.

A quarter of the Top 20 worst places are made up of London local boroughs, while Scotland and Northern Ireland do not feature at all.

The best place to live will be announced on Location, Location, Location on Wednesday.

The independent survey was based on data from bodies including local authorities, the Home Office and the Office For National Statistics.

Yahoo News.

Here is the Top 20 worst list:

1. Middlesbrough - North East 2. Hull - Humberside 3. Newham - East London 4. Nottingham - East Midlands 5. Merthyr Tydfil - South Wales 6. North East Lincolnshire - Eastern England 7. Islington - North London8. Blaenau Gwent - South Wales 9. Mansfield - East Midlands 10. Knowsley - Merseyside 11. Blackpool - North West 12. Hackney - East London 13. Stoke-on-Trent - Staffordshire 14. Barking and Dagenham - East London 15. Doncaster - South Yorkshire 16. Cannock Chase - Staffordshire 17. Manchester - North West 18. Haringey - North London 19. Burnley - Lancashire 20. Hartlepool - North East

I'm sure there will be a few people defending there towns? Could this be run down cities where the government are build more housing and get people back to work?

At least we are not top of this list. Hull has had more than its fair share of problems

Loss of jobs in the food processing industry
Massive under investment in schools
Floods
Bransholme

On the other hand, there is:
The new St Stephen's development.
New riverside housing developments
The marina and Island wharf
a new spirit of optimism is a lot of the city.

And an attitude the states

"This is OUR city and we love it and we don't care what anyone else says"

I'm not disputing the overall point made but must just say that our younger grandson, born in March, had to spend two weeks on Neonatal Paeds at James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, as there were no places in Newcastle when one was needed, and his medical and general care were second to none.

Seems like its mainly the North East & inner cities that feature on the list. I wonder sometimes why more industry & financial services cant be tempted to locate in the North East. One of the sad things about the Northern Rock problems is the probable demise of one of the few independent financial companies to locate in that area.

It would appear that in most financial institutions, the map of the UK ends at Watford to the north. Above that is the legend " Here be Dragons!!"

Sometimes people say 'north of Watford Gap' which is a service station on the M1 in Northamptonshire, and yes the village of Watford is close by on the B5385. Probably 60 miles from London, still not very far 'north' but certainly dragons live there unmolested Smile

It was conducted by the Home Office whose writ runs only to England. Maybe the Scotish executive will oblige with a separate 50 worst places to live in Scotland survey? Laughing

I think it's all nonsense and designed only to attract attention (and free PR) for a TV programme. Who actually cares? If you live in one of them places you ain't got a lot of choice, and if you don't you don't care. That's about it.
