Downing Street has urged motorists not to panic-buy petrol and diesel ahead of a planned strike by tanker drivers delivering fuel for Shell on Friday.

So all fuel companies will have to start to talk to one another so the pumps don't run dry. They don't usually due to rival competition.
There has to be other ways to stop this happening? It's getting really stupid.

Cue panic for fuel! (I do believe that people really are that stupid).

I'd love to know what, exactly. Shall we give them your contact details, Mark? You can earn a fortune in consultancy fees I'm sure! _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Just before the last strike the Government urged motorists not to panic buy but the effect was largely nullified by scaremongering in the press.

Quite right. The words "Don't Panic!" bring a certain Corporal Jones to mind, don't they? The effect of his instruction was usually panic. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Bit like the housing market situation as discussed on the Vine show today, it's mostly media induced I reckon.
Think how much easier life would be if we didn't know about everything which happen in other parts of the county as soon as it happens!
Why is it I'm always on empty when they tell you not to panic buy?? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Does anyone know what the tanker drivers earn?
It's implied in the press that they're currently on about £36k per annum.
I don't doubt for a moment that they do skilled work--the health and safety requirements alone probably back this up--but they seem to be doing pretty well compared with other groups.
I don't think that a 13% rise is justifiable when most other workers are getting much less than this.

According to the talking heads on JV at lunchtime today, around £32K basic (which apparently hasn't changed for some 15 years), plus whatever overtime they're prepared to put in, up to a total of around £36K. They'd apparently be happy with increasing the basic to £36K. I wish I could get a pay rise along these lines.... my latest deal works out to 7% over 3 years - sounds nice but it's actually 2.7% in the first year, 2.4% in the second and 2.1% in the third - so that's effective pay reductions each year, especially when you take the rising cost of living into account. Where do I sign up to drive a fuel tanker? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I know somebody who drives a malt whisky tanker between the distilleries in Scotland and he doesn't earn that much - even though his load can be valued at £2million upwards.
I feel sorry for the smaller HGV haulage business owners who seem to be hit from all sides at the moment - with fuel costs being just one of their problems. Their drivers going on strike against them isn't going to help them one bit. Still, I don't suppose many drivers have struggled to run a business of their own - unless they're owner-drivers, of course. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. I think some people on the Jeremy Vines show saying that the drivers are greedy are pathetic. You could say a lot of workers who strike or have disagree with their wages are greedy. Yes they are on good money, but they do a dangerous job driving these tankers up and down motorways etc with tons of fuel behind them. I do think there should be a balance with Pay awards as Police, the Fire service and NHS staff do have a dangerous job? |

I wouldn't say they're pathetic Mark. I tend to agree with them, £36 - £39k a year is pretty good money I'd say.
Like the lady said, they should wake up and be think how lucky they are to have a job - let alone a highly paid job..
Dangerous? well yes. responsible too, but as mentioned on the show, don't you think you and other Bus drivers have a similar responsibility; transporting 50 people or so around? ( maybe you earn over that, I don't know.. )
If the tankers are that dangerous, maybe they shouldn't be transporting petrol on the roads?
No, I think they're out of order in the present climate. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
