Well done to Barack Obama who will be the next Black President of US.
Black people in some states of America weren't even allowed to vote years ago. It shows the world has changed.
Time for change right across the world. |

you mean "first" Mark.
The world hasn't changed that much at all Mark- to even mention the colour of someone's skin , shows that we haven't moved an inch - the BBC are really bad at just letting it go.
What's wrong with saying "Barack Obama won the presidential election."

Change - what does that mean? 2 years, several billion dollars, weeks of tv, acres of newsprint and still nobody knows what this "change" will be? Maybe he will repaint the White House. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Its historic. But isn't every election historic? After it happens anyway. On the news they were referring to something as historic even though it had yet to happen. Do they live in a parallel world? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I'm sure I read somewhere that Barrack isn't the first Black US president? I'm going back to the 1700 when the United States wasn't as big as it is today. Anyway I sure there is a lot to be done to get the United States back on it's feet. Time will tell in the next 4 Years?
I'm wonder if someone will try and assassinate him , because of his colour? |

The first president was George Washington in 1790 (ish). All were white and all Protestant apart from JFK. Some probably had black mistresses and may have fathered children from these relationships (Jefferson?).

I think most people are still doing ok, its just there is a general unease that things are not going to be as good in the future as they have been previously. Partly thats because they have been living off borrowed money (same as the rest of us) and partly because other countries are catching up with the US.
I think they just need a hug! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I can't see it be down to Barrack and his administration to bring all the troops home from Iraq etc? It's up to the commanders on the ground to decide this? Just like the UK tropps |

Nawww, Mark's right, James Earl Jones was the first Black US president, in 1972, and Morgan Freeman was the second Black US president, in 1988, some folks don't know their history

I find the constant reference to "Black President" a little tiring too, particularly as the Beeb was asking this morning if and when we should have a "Black Prime Minister too"
Anyway, according to Drivetime this evening, he isn't black, he's coffee coloured... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I personally couldn't care less if he's purple with orange spots, I'm just glad he got in.
f McCain had won would he have been announced as the 44th white president, I don't think so.
I think those on drive time will find the correct term is 'of mixed race' |

In the same way, they have made much of Lewis Hamilton being "the first black Formula 1 champion" In fact the emphasis was so strong it was quite unpleasant.
Barack himself has been at pains to avoid reference to colour or race, pointing out that all voters and citizens are American. And he's dead right - they are and they all have the same roots, as immigrants, apart from the indigenous Indian population, I suppose. _________________ Ron |

Just seeing the delight on the faces of thousands of black voters in the US yesterday confirms that having a black president means so much to them and they won't get 'tired' of referring to him as the 'black president'.
Can you imagine the scene across the US if McCain had won? So, to many it IS important that they have a black president.
You can't ignore the pride that black people feel, and the feeling that there is increased hope for a better future for them and for everyone. My family is mixed race and yesterday all the black cousins, brothers and sisters here in UK were sending/forwarding messages to each other, messages of thanks for Obama.

For a black man to become President of the USA is a major step forward and one that would have been unthinkable a decade or two ago. So all credit to Mr Obama for his achievement.
But it's time now to move on and concentrate on his policies rather than his colour.

Don't forget that the TV series '24' had a black President, played by Denis Haysbert. His character was 'President Palmer' (rhymes with Obama!) |

Yes, I don't wish to detract from the achievement of something that was considered impossible even only ten years ago, but, since we have it drummed into us from all angles these days that we live in a multi-cultural, multi-racial and unisex society, where children cannot even recite "Baa Baa Black Sheep" or write on a blackboard, where reference to and decorations for festivals like Christmas have been toned down or even dropped altogether by some authorities, and where one has to use the word person instead of man or woman, I find it odd that the only description they can come up with, in headlines four inches tall, for both Barack Obama and Lewis Hamilton, is Black. _________________ Ron |

Yes, and the next series will feature a female president...
May I just say that if reality decides to reflect fiction in this department, please God can it not be with Sarah Palin in 2012... |

The ONLY description? I think you are offering a dis-service there, Ron. There has been no shortage, in both cases, of descriptive words like determined, courageous, brilliant.
If they weren't black would their achievements be any the less? Of course not,
They have achieved what they did through their supreme effort and ability, but also by overcoming additional obstacles and distractions that others would not have experienced, particularly Hamilton right up to that last race, indeed those additional obstacles may have increased the determination and ensured their success.
And remember (I have personal knowledge within my family) that black people are celebrating their blackness, it's mainly white folks who want to avoid mentioning it, some sort of PC foolishness methinks.

Wasn't it Lenny Bruce who did a piece about 'How to relax your black friends at parties?' Also Dick Gregory tried to de-fuse the 'N' word by using it all the time in his act. |

I'm not sure this is as true in the States as it is here to be honest. I think there are benefits to their system. Because they change the top levels of the Civil Service as well when power changes hands. Unlike here where we all know "Yes Minister" runs the country regardless of which party is in power.
If you think about it the US to some extent modelled it's democracy on bits from other countries, so I think they have far more of a democracy than we do.
I think it is fantastic news for the world I felt moved to tears when I watched his acceptance speech he truly is a remarkable man with a remarkable wife and very brave too IMO.
