Reminds me of those cold war films where the spies offices were disguised as bookshops _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Hmmm typical:- all the post offices I've seen are painted bright red with "Post Office" in large yellow text over the door. Daddy- I want a <stamp foot>SECRET Post Office! |

Well, we've got two secret post offices near us.
One is hidden in a back corner of an Asian grocer shop and the other is at the back of a WH Smith!
I went to the Asian one at 1.00pm and sure enough it was closed!!
(It opened again at 1.30) |

I was surprised to find that, with the round of post office closures which they have just completed, it wasn't just the small, rural branches which got the chop, but some large offices in major towns and cities, for example (because we've been there) Worcester and Fort William. In both those cases they have taken space in the local W H Smith, but the signage isn't exactly eyecatching, and in the Worcester store the post office is on the upper floor, reached by escalator, which must cause problems for the elderly and disabled.
The rationalisation of sorting offices seems a natural thing to undertake to make the back office functions of Royal Mail more efficient - in some areas they are closing two or more offices and replacing them with one larger one - and save money. Mind you, they could also save money by not having sent everyone a Christmas card this year.
Since they have little or no public access (as opposed to the local delivery offices where you go to pick up undelivered mail) I'm not sure that national public consultation on the matter is required. _________________ Ron |
