(aka World Domination)

Not content with 33% market share, and saturating the land with ugly warehouses that have all the charm of a dairy barn in a heatwave, Tesco are now planning to set up as many convenience stores as they can squeeze into a square mile.

Nottingham city centre already has one Metro and two Express (the c-store format, open up to 24 hours a day, for the residents and fallout from the pubs and clubs), and Tesco has plans at an advanced stage for two more, with at least two further, including one in the new Westfield Centre, highly likely. This is in addition to the ten other stores of varying size they have in the suburbs, within three miles of the centre.

It's part of a "multi-site strategy", developed for them by advisers to the more traditional local store chain Spar, who decided not to proceed. Apparently the experience of those stores opened so far is that there's no cannibalisation, at least, not of other Tesco store sales figures.

Poor old Arkwright will be turning... There'll soon be more Tescos than pubs or telephone boxes Rolling Eyes

In NE Coventry there's a massive Tesco near Jn 2 of the M6, and a mile south, t'other side of the Univ. Hospital there's ANOTHER massive Tesco.

CV2 2TS and CV2 2SH

So close that they fit in this google photo:

If they don't succeed they just keep trying...

Over in Norwich they found a friendly planning officer from outside the area to approve at the fifth attempt an application for a store on Unthank Road (such a pretty name - nearly as good as the Carsic Estate in Sutton-in-Ashfield Smile ) despite unanimous objections from local councillors, residents and traders

It's quite a nice road too.. my mum and sister both ran hotels on it for years.

I would imagine the approval was awarded under Appeal which would overrule the Norwich Planning Department's previous decisions. They won't be very happy about it either.
I tried three Planning Applications for our own "change of use" from Hotel to Residential Home before I compiled and lodged an Appeal to the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol.
Luckily for me, the Local Authority suddenly had a change of mind when they received my Appeal documents... Razz
