Normally I'd say no, but lately I've been a little sentimental over the Woodstock happening..

I listened to part of the recent Radcliffe interview with somebody from Ireland ( now passed away ) who went to the festival and found myself wanting more after hearing some of the acts again..

Of course like most, I only saw it at the cinema and was positively bursting waiting for my hero Jimi Hendrix to appear.
Actually, I admit to being disappointed with his performance. His playing wasn't great, he looked completely peed off and the atmosphere, not helped by the editing of the film, was horrid.

Long time since I've seen the film but two of the highlights for me were Santana and Ten Years After.
Yes, I think I would buy it to wallow in nostalgia now and then... Razz

Don't forget that, due to the weather and the anarchic organisation, Hendrix didn't appear until the morning of the last day - by which time many of the festival-goers were on their way home.

I'd be interested to see how the original cinema mast has been treated for the DVD, because it was made in super-widescreen in order to accomodate three 16mm camera outputs at the same time. I remember seeing it on a very widescreen in the cinema and was blown away by a technique that had never been used before - but quite how it's going to look on DVD in 16:9 is anybody's guess. I also remember the original sound track to be awful as well, but none of this will detract from the the uniqueness of the event and I certainly look forward to seeking the digitally remastered film on DVD.

Yes, I knew he was in a graveyard slot, but I did get the feeling that his heart wasn't in it.. maybe for that reason.
Didn't the film covering his spot also show mounds of rubbish and deserted muddy areas etc? this, and that cold morning light, didn't help in my opinion.. I wanted to see the flamboyant, confident "feather in his hat" Jimi we knew from a couple of years earlier..

Are you sure about the wide screen format Colby? maybe a different technique but I remember seeing that circus film with Charlton Heston back in 1964 on my first trip to London... it was just off Trafalgar Square and I think it had "Cinerama" on the Theatre.
I'm sure the screen was 180 degrees...

Cinerama's different in that scenes were filmed with three special cameras configured to cover the whole 360 degree view, and then three synchronised projectors were used to display the results. I remember seeing a Cinerama roadshow in a Big Top in Central Park in Plymouth circa 1968. Amazing - of course technology has come on somewhat since!

The way Woodstock was shot was that, initially, the idea was to shoot a documentary interspersed with actual performances on 16mm film. Of course, 16mm isn't widescreen by anybody's measure, and the director, Michael Wadleigh and the film's editors (one of whom was Martin Scorsese) had a dilemma because they'd shot literally hundreds of miles of film of absolutely everything and gone way over budget.

So what they decided to do was to actually place three images simultaneously onto the screen side-by-side. This was quite a revolutionary technique at the time and a bit daring - but since "the establishment" held no truck with everyone involved what did it matter? - but the only problem was that showing it in cinemas meant that they had to have the full anamorphic projection systems to get the "letterbox" width of the print. Showing on good old-fashioned 4:3 format TV (ie: not widescreen) was always a joke because they had to programme in pan & scan to literally move around the frame. That completely destroyed the effect!

A friend of mine used to work in the VTR/Telecine department down in the infamous "Basement" at Television Centre told me once what a joke it was trying to show that film.

So, with today's HDTVs it should look pretty good when playing off BluRay in 1080i or 1080p but it will still have to play in a letterbox format in order to get the full width into the frame.

I hear that the sound for the new release has been completely rebuilt from the original source masters and remixed digitally, and I can't wait to hear it! (Like I said above, the original theatrical sound mix was pretty rough and has survived to this day).

In many ways, Woodstock seemed to put the lid on all the ideals of the 60s, did it not? I always felt that things got a whole lot more serious once we moved into the grey 70s.

Edit: The Wikipedia page has now updated to include reference to the remastered film, which is available on BluRay.

Out of curiosity, is that DVD, CD or both in the set? (I could check on Amazon but hey!).

I should hope, for sixty quid, that it's a bit more than quite good.

I've always thought that Woodstock was long on hype and reputation, mud and shambolic organisation and short on artistic or musical merit.

True, a few names were made, but money certainly wasn't. If you were there you've probably got a lot to tell your kids, but by and large the resulting albums and movie were boring.

I assumed that was a reference to the technical quality, actually!

I thought that both the music and the film was good, despite its flaws.

Not, it is a six CD set, no DVD. It includes quite alot of material not previously released. Just listened to CD1 and much of CD2. Very much to my taste, a bit on the folky side with a touch of country.
Sadly, John sebastians absolutely bonkers The Younger generation (included in the movie) is not here, but we have the gorgeous i Had a Dream & Rainbow all over your blues.
melanie, arlo guthrie, Baez, all goodstuff. and there ios a long set from Jefferson Airplane, also Creedence, i have yet to listen to.
Also, there is a book

This song isn't on the CD set, but it's in the movie. Made me laugh

Why must every generation think they're folks are square?
And no matter where they're heads are, they know mom's aint there.
Cause' I swore when I was small, that I'd remember when,
I knew what's wrong with them, that I was smaller than.

Determined to remember all the cardinal rules.
Like, sunshowers are legal grounds, for cutting school.
I know I have forgotten maybe one or two.
And I hope that I recall them all before the baby's due.
And I'll know he'll have a question or two.

Like, hey pop. Can I go ride my zoom?
It goes twohundred miles an hour, suspended on baloons.
And can I put a droplet of this new stuff on my tounge?
And imagine puffing dragons, while you sit and wreck your'e lungs.
And I must me permissive, understanding of the younger generation.

And then I know that all I've learned, my kid assumes.
And all my deepest worries must be his cartoons.
And still I'll try to tell him all the things I've done,
relating to what he can do when he becomes a man.
And still he'll stick his fingers in the fan.

And hey pop, my girlfriend's only three.
She's got her own videophone,
and she's taking LSD.
And now that were best friends, she want's to give a bit to me.
But whats the matter daddy? How come your'e turning green?
Can it be that you can't live up to your dreams?

I wonder which was the first film to do this?
