Mandeville is a corruption of mandilion, a 16th century man's jacket, but the association is supposed to be Stoke Mandeville Hospital which specialises in treatment of spinal injuries. |
I wondered why that was chosen - I'm always alerted to the reference to Mandeville because our daughter was treated for Scoliosis at Stoke Mandeville. A marvellous hospital!
Not so sure about the mascots, though, buy hey - we appear to have got used to the Olympics 2012 logo after such a long time. |

As a former toy designer who worked on the merchandise for the Manchester Commonwealth Games I can speak from experience when I say this is a massive cock-up (almost literally, if you look at the designs).
They are nice ideas, but as merchandise not especially cute. Two eyes would help, less shiny would also help a bit. But, basically, lots of unofficial bulldog/lion/bear toys will come out and sell by the truckload, leaving poor old W & M on the shelves. And the London Olympics won't get a penny! |
