Listening to Ken Bruce today he's been reading out stories from listeners who have turned up late for various things and it reminded me of a situation back in 1992 when I was living with my former wife in St Helens.
There was a very exciting and much talked about band called Poisoned Electrik Head but eveytime they played a gig we were always either on holiday away or otherwise unable to attend.
It was my wife's birthday coming up and one day when I was walking through the town centre and saw a poster advertising a gig of theirs at a local leisure centre on 26th June with punters able to pay on the door and I thought what a nice birthday surprise that will make.
On the date in question I got in some champagne ordered a cab and after my wife had spent hours getting ready at around 8pm in great anticipation we finally left for the gig.
We arrived at the venue 20 minutes later only to find the whole place in total darkness and all the doors locked and after walking round for several minutes I finally clapped eyes on a local man going into the snooker club next door and asked him if he knew what was going on as there was supposed to be a gig that evening.
He looked at me rather vacantly and pointed to a copy of the same poster I had seen and said
'Oh do you mean that one, yes it was fantastic I remember it well
It was about this time last year'
Needless to say my ex wife was unimpressed and she kept muttering something about the fact she wished people wouldn't play April fool jokes 3 months late
We never did get to see the band and to make matters worse two days later my car cassette player chewed up my tape of their only album called Unmistakeably Rainbow Trout
What a fiasco!
Can anyone beat this for being late for a gig or anything else for that matter.
At least the wonderful Ken Bruce seems to have got in on the act as he was late for the 10am news bulletin today!
