Terrific programme about a great group of women....highly recommend it
During World War Two, a remarkable band of female pilots fought against all odds for the right to aid the war effort. Without these Spitfire Women the war may never have been won.

Loved it Becks, so much so that I got the book out of the library today -Spitfire Women of World War 2 - by Giles Whittell, he's the guy who was featured as the main talking head in the programme.
I've really been captivated by all the Battle of Britain coverage - so much so, that I'm taking myself off for a day out to the Aviation museum at Tangmere tomorrow. Want to see a Spitfire and Hurricane up close.
Am currently reading another marvellous book - Spitfire Pilot by David Crook (who sadly died in 1944 aged just 30) but wrote the book prior to that as a journal. His daughter has reissued it with updates and pictures and so on.
Did you see the James Holland documentary on Wednesday. Another corking programme. It's still up on the iplayer if you missed it. |

It was a great programme Soulsis and a lot of my enjoyment of it was due to Giles Whittell's contribution.....so it's not surprising to find out he has written a book on it.....thanks for that ....the main library in my area has been just closed for 12  months for refurbishment so will have a look for that book in the small local one next time I'm near it ....if I remember.
I haven't seen the James Holland documentary but will watch if I can find the time before it disappears...
Hope you have a lovely day tomorrow...looking at the aircraft you will be able imagine those wonderful women sitting in them..nail varnish intact...  |

I'll be thinking more about the fighter pilots if I'm honest Becks. Some of them even in their late 80s and early 90s are still fine looking men.
But yes - the women too were incredible. My favourite bit was where one of them said she'd delivered the dirty great big Lancaster or Wellington (can't remember which one - but one of the big bombers) and when she arrived at the airfield they had a car waiting to take the pilot off to his accommodation. She got out of the plane and they asked where the pilot was - she told them 'it's me'. They didn't believe her and even went and had a look round inside the plane to see where he was  |
