Sorry if this subject has been touched on before, but last night I was catching up on some stuff I've recorded on TV, and I recorded the above prog in May.

Moyles met all the R1 brekky DJ's of his era, starting with Mike Read, I'd forgotten all about him, but do recall him being entertaining and very knowledgeable on the music front.

It got me thinking that this guy is one ex R1 DJ that really should be on R2, he has none of the cheesyness of Blackburn, Bates, Edmonds and DLT.

Anyone else agree?

The programme was also interesting for the fact that the great CE refused to appear, and Mike Smith was quite bitter, and a little scathing of Moyles & co's 'in yer face' style.

I think Mike Read and DLT should both be back on BBC Radio where they belong
I have no problem with Tony Blackburn doing selected shows
I don't really like Noel Edmonds but having said that he wasn't too bad when he sat in for Johnnie Walker during his absence through illness a few years ago
All the names mentioned can run rings around Chris Moyles and of course his namesake equivalent we are stuck with at breakfast on Radio 2

I've listened to Mike Read on BigL occasionally and I have to conclude that he's as cheesy and as "80s" as he ever was! Would he be good for R2? Not sure....... Isn't the station trying to "move on"?

His knowledge of chart music is encyclopaedic, it has to be said.

Move on to where? It appears to me that its alienating many of its over 45 listeners by doing so.

This cheesy thing is something that was touched on in the programme, yes it was a joke all these greying 50+ DJ's still on R1, but they still had an audience, R1 has never really recovered, some shows were still getting 12m listeners, and that popularity should have been filtered onto R2.

Blackburn was probably the cheesiest of the lot, but seems to have gone full circle and he is in demand again, and on R2!

Smashy and Nicey have a lot to answer for!

Didn't he do part of the book of hit singles ?

Cheesy ? Yes. All I remember is him banning Frankie goes to Hollywoods relax.

Not my idea of R2, too much old R1 already.

I remember seeing that and a good programme it was too.

I was a bit disappointed that it started with Mike Reid. I would love to have heard what DLT would have said and I don't see how you can a programme about breakfast DJs without the doyen of them all, TB. Then again, did he appear at the end of the show? Memory's going! It's a bugger, this getting old Rolling Eyes

Of the wrong variety!

But where should R2's 'new' talent come from? Most are critical of the celeb thing, so where should Bob be looking?

He should be looking for a new job because he's useless at his current one.

The BBC should be promoting talented people from local radio and give them a chance to show what they can do
Many of the best current presenters began this way including Simon Mayo and Dale Winton
Forget the celebs and get in some proper professionals

I remember hearing a story about his obsession with the Icicle Works aparently he couldn't -- you know-- without them on in the background.

R2 should not be a resting place for R1 dj's they should get it on merit. Currently R2 should look after what they have as they seem to be sidelining the best they have

Mike Reed Razz cheesy?
Yes he was a little as I remember him... he was ok though, very polite, spoke good English at a reasonable pace unlike the gabbling, hyper, giggling, mumbling annoyances we have to turn off today.

I don't agree Tony Blackburn is cheesy either.. he loves his job and I'd imagine he's a real nice fellow to all.. pity there aren't few more like him around in all departments today. Hopefully, he'll do a little more on 2 as the years roll on.. and what with all this "move forward" caper? why do we have to move forward all the time? sometimes it's better to stand still and enjoy the view.

Gary Davies... now he was a cheese party.. much like his counterpart today! Rolling Eyes

Radio 2 have let go or sidelined far too many broadcasters and IMHO we seem to have lost a generation in the process.

Wogan to Evans (sorry to bring it up but it's the best example) is too much of a jump in age and broadcasting style, which is why I think so many are up in arms about him.

Not sure if the cheesy style would be acceptable but they would be better than the 'text in this and text in that' brigade. I'd like to know why the BBC pay so much for the listeners to do all the work for the so called presenters.

Absolutely! I've been banging on about this for a while.

Few seem to appreciate that fact, you would have to be over 30 to remember Radio 1 pre 1993, the only insight they have to it is Smashy & Nicey, which at a swipe made it uncool.

Smashy & Nicey did to music radio what Ben Elton & Co did to TV comedy.

So have I. I'd given up with R1 when Smashy & Nicey were around, for various reasons, but I don't want the style now on Radio 2. Why do they think we want exactly what we grew up with in later years? Some of it maybe, but our tastes change and we move on.

There was reason it was parodied, by the time R1 changed it was well over due. I remember pre Bannister and think he did a cracking job of changing the guard. Which is what is needed on R1 everynow and again. R2 is a different animal.
R2 may play old more varied music but it shouldn't keep looking back all the time.
Wogan was past his best when he went, but to replace him with as Helen says such a big jump target age wise with Evans maybe wrong.
If you look at the list of shows on the R2 site there are some great dj's/shows but not ON enough. The next generation of R2 is already in Lamacq, Maconie, Radcliffe, Lamarr, Nelson even Willie on the right show. So why are they being marginalised Sad

Ther are being marginalised unfairly to make way for the dreaded celebs with whom Bob Shennan seems to be addictively obsessed

Nope, I'm not having that. Though I abhor the influx of celeb DJs, particularly that Alan Carr feller, the reason that Lamacq, Nelson and Lamarr are marginalised is because they play margin music, all very niche and for the initiated and, to my ear, unworthy of primetime broadcasting.

God's Jukebox my arse. Cool

Yes for what primetime is now, but on all the boards I go on and the old R2 board all you see is poeple moaning about the playlist etc, R2 has the best and most varied selction to play from but doesn't go near far enough. Both Radcliffe and Maconie (separately) would be more than capable of holding a primetime slot, Nelson and Lamacq if their shows were tweeked a little.

It's because some presenters have continued to play "marginal" music that many a good new band has been able to break into the mainstream. You only have to look at the influence that people like John Peel, Annie Nightingale and others have had over the years.

Without such exposure, radio output can only continue to be dominated with the dire, formulaic and predictable pap.

I don't see any reason why the aforementioned "left field" presenters shouldn't be given more primetime exposure. Radio 2's daytime music output is now so bad that a radical shift is urgently required.

Trouble is that I don't Shennan has either the sense of adventure or the guts to invoke such a change.

Sad
If he rocks the boat too much the Daily Mail lobby arm of R2 listeners will be in uproar. Saying that they do always seem to be anyway
