I went to see the excelent Beth Nielson Chapman in concert at the Fairfield hall, Croydon. At one point she said "Thank you, Radio 2. Thank you terry Wogan".
This reminded me that during his Breakfast show years Terry Wogan was a great champion of talent. He gave airplay to many artistes who had not gotten airplay elsewhere on UK Radio.
Amongsts artistes to whome he gave a big boost in the UK was the excelent Beth Nielson Chapman & quite a few others.
I used to enjoy Terry's breakfast show till the last year or so when I thought they were becomming stodgy & too much of the Janet & John nonsense.
But at his best, Wogan was a broadcasting legend & broadened the musical horizons of many of his listeners

Personally I thought his musical Knowledge was minimal unless you are talking Euovision of course
He had been well past his best(if that is the appropriate word to use) for years and was right to call it a day
The only problem was what followed after he went |

I would disagree on his musical knowledge. He did play some good artistes who otherwise did not get exposure on UK radio.
I agree that his show had deteriorated & become self indulgent & (to me) irritating in the last year or two.
But i think at his best he was pretty good.
He was right to retire when he did, but then going on to do the awful "Wogan" sunday show has really muddied his reputation. |

The late Paul Walters was always the one for the music on Wogan, not sure if it wasn't he who first championed Beth Nielsen Chapman?
Johnny Walker also had her on Drivetime well over a decade ago, and on subsequent occasions after that, as I can remember listening to her when we were stuck on the ringroad in Bristol on a Friday night .
