England have lost out to Russia to host the 2018 World Cup. David Beckham, Prince William and David Cameron along with other well known sport personalites just couldn't pull it off.
I think we lost out before the BBC Panaroma FIFA corruption programme was aired. We just don't have any friends in FIFA. The structure of English football isn't right. We don't have the right England Managers. Not all our players are passionate to play for England.
The whole English game from the the FA downwards needs to be looked at.
It a shame, but England could still win the 2018 World Cup. |

There's a good chance we might see some airborne pork as well. |

The whole FIFA system is riddled with corruption from top to bottom
Its all down to who's friends with who just like the voting for the Eurovision Song Contest
Russia has mainly artificial pitches and a corrupt business environment hardly the ideal place to hold the greatest football competition in the world
As for 2022 in Qatar they will have to build every stadium from scratch with expensive air conditioning to keep temperatures bearable
Whilst the current England team are a national embarrasment am I the only person who feels that most of the world is now anti British including some of our so called friends? _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

No, I think you're right Ruddles, but I didn't really care if we won the bid or lost it.

Yes Helen, I know that if people are not keen on football they probably might not be too bothered but there is a bigger picture here
Unlike the Olympics which is essentially London and South East based the World Cup would have brought very large numbers of visitors to places like Manchester Liverpool Newcastle etc and they would have spent a great deal of money benefiting these and many other areas and possibly creating some much needed employment
I'm sure this explains why politicians were taking so much interest in the England bid and to be fair I don't think the likes of David Cameron and David Beckham and Prince William could have done any more
Its like most things in life today, its not really about football or which nation is best equipped to put on the best tournament, its all about money and greasing the right palms _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That's what I was agreeing with as well as not being bothered if we got it or not though!

No wonder Putin decided to stay in Moscow. He obviously knew that the right palms had been greased with Russian Mob Money so the deal was done.
Panorama might have got it all bang on the nose!!! |

It was said that Qatar swung it with saying they would dismantle stadiums they built for 2022 and give them to needy nations afterwards |

If it had been down to the Panorama program then it should have been closer, I think it was more to do with the subject on Panorama rather than the airing of it. Blatter and FIFA aren't even transparent in the way they choose hosts, this is the biggest sporting event in the world and it is run by greasing palms.
Well done BBC for airing it, if it had gone out after the event then as John Seargent said on QT last night it would look like sour grapes, but worse if England had won it would have looked like England were involved in the corruption.
Time for an Olympic type surge in the voting system for hosts and more transparency.
Beck I think Quatar clinched it by cash the same as the Russians did. _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

To take a famous quote...'There is something about the night in Fifa'
The awards have been given to two non democratic countries.
Countires that live in the back or corruption.
Have any of you ever been to Qatar? It is a VERY strict Islamic country. Your average Brit, Dutch French German supporter will be put in jail if they go about with no shirt on.... and boy!!! is it hot there.! Yes they promised ...air con inside but it is still very hot, and you have to go out side to get from A to B. And no alcohol ....It will be a wayyyyy different experience for the average travelling supporter.
With a bit of luck Fifa will be exposed well before the world cup gets to Qatar and we will have found out exactly what Putin did to stage the world cup
And all that has come from someone who does not follow footie but I needed that rant. So you can't call it sour grapes _________________ I like hedgehog crisps |

Yes I saw QT last night and couldn't agree more with John Sergeant. I think that what the BBC and The Times now have to do is push even harder to expose the true scale of corruption within FIFA and blast them out of the water. Something really stinks about this whole deal.

According to a discussion on 5Live there was an alleged "tat for tat" voting deal between Qatar and Spain/Portugal too. |

I saw John Sargeant on QT as well and totally agree with him.
I must admit when I heard Putin wasn't going to the vote I thought 'he knows he has got it'.

I watched Question Time and for the first time in my life I actually found myself in agreement with Ken Livingstone over this issue
Whilst looking at the voting yesterday I don't think the Panorama programme probably made much of a difference the point is on a close vote it could have done and that could have cost this country billions of pounds in lost revenue not to mention disappointment to thousands of football fans
The BBC is no better than the tabloid press
None of them care how much they ruin the lives of individuals by their scurrilous lies and it would seem that they don't care one jot about potentially costing this country billions of pounds just so long as they control the agenda and can do as they like
The Panorama programme had already been delayed by over a month so what difference would it have made to wait one more week which as was pointed out last night is a normal operational decision for BBC producers
Of course most people already know that FIFA is corrupt and this situation needs to be investigated but there are times when a country has to act in its own interests and with a free press comes an obligation for them to behave responsibly which is not a concept the British Media seems to understand _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Holding back the story just legitimises the corruption by going along with it. I didn't watch the Panorama in question but he show's integrity isn't in question here it's FIFA and as soon as there is the evidence then the show should be aired as it was. THe British media unlike other countries media esp Russia's are not controlled by the state and it shouldn't be, maybe there were stories to go in the Russian press but the journalists were either shot or disabled. Yes a much better way at least the country got the World Cup
Yes England were dumped but at least it was a well run campaign, and no laws were broken and can hold their heads up high. _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

Taking that argument to its logical conclusion England should boycott the World Cup until problems of corruption have been resolved
We got the worst of both worlds by failing to box clever and avoid offending the corrupt FIFA Executive until the time was right ie after the vote yesterday whilst at the same time spending millions on a bid which had no chance of success
To my mind the choice is either we use the system already in place to the best advantage we can or opt out of the competition completely
Why can't honest countries start a rival competition holding the finals in mainstream football countries and ignoring these corrupt fringe states?
After all it happens already in Boxing and in Darts so perhaps the time has come to do something radical as I for one am not convinced that FIFA will ever change
At the end of the day money will always talk with that corrupt organisation _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I think the BBC was absolutely right to publish the Panorama expose when it did. As somebody adding a comment to a piece on the subject over on the BBC Sport's web pages wrote, "I'd rather have a free press (which many other FIFA member countries don't have) than host the next World Cup and be complicit in the corruption that lies at the heart of the organisation".
I don't agree with Ken Livingstone's view, therefore. It's not good journalism to "hold on to a story" when you have all the facts. It's been said that final editing was still taking place only two hours before transmission, after which BBC lawyers had to then sign it off for TX. To hold it over and transmit it after the announcement yesterday would indeed have been sour grapes (as John Sergeant pointed out) and we would have been a laughing-stock.
The fact that the BBC had the courage to lay all the (alleged) facts about corruption on the table up front proves to others that many of them don't have what we have - a free press. (Well, comparatively free, anyhow!).
It's a shame that we didn't get the gig because Milton Keynes was in line to be a host venue - and CEO of MKDons Pete Winkleman has done so much to increase the profile of sport in the city. Never mind.... |

Frankly Colin its a joke to talk about Britain having a 'free Press'
Most of the rubbish published in the British media is as a result of journalists offering money for information which suits their agenda but if information they receive contradicts their agenda they don't even publish it
The British press is equally corrupt as the FIFA Executive and in the past there have been numerous examples of stories which the press have sat on until it suited their purpose to publish
Nobody is suggesting the media was not right to inquire into the subject but having had years to do so it seems a bit odd that they should choose a date only three days before such a vital vote to put such things in the public domain
To my mind the timing is pure mischief making on someones part _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That's why I added the "comparatively free" rider on my statement. The BBC story would have been killed before it was even born by the administration of many nations.
I still think the BBC was right to broadcast the programme when it did. Mischief? Maybe - but it's helped to raise the debate and that's no bad thing. |

The timing and content of the Panorama programme and The Sunday Times' revelations obviously didn't help England's cause but, as has been stated already, the hideously corrupt Sepp Blatter had already made up his mind to chose Russia.
The other side of the coin is that there is no reason why it shouldn't go to a corrupt and underdeveloped country like Russia. Such countries, including recent hosts South Africa, are the future of football and probably the source of the best players in the future.
I wasn't too upset that we didn't win the bid (though when all the excitement starts in 2018 I'll probably be wishing it was in England of course). Winning the bloody thing is more importtant! |

Acting FA Chairman Roger Burden isn't going too be applying for the job fulltime, as he doesn't want anything to do with FIFA. He said "some of the FIFA members pledging their support the night before to Prince William and David Cameron". Then they turned there backs on England. |

I am amazed at the surprise by a lot of the general public. We have known for years that FIFA is a corrupt organisation (allegedly) but we were still willing to turn a blind eye, and jump through their hoops and generally toady around them to gain their favour. How Blatter must have loved a future British King, a British Prime Minister, and a British Sporting Hero, begging like dogs for the crumbs that he may drop from his table;all the while knowing that they had no chance.
If you are willing to get into bed with these shady characters, you must be prepared to suffer the consequences.
