Gunshot sensors have been installed in Birmingham. The US style system called the ' shotspotter ' records a GPS audio clip to where the location of the gunshot. Trained police will make judgement first to where the location was before deploying officers.

It be interesting to see if this will work.

What is a "GPRS audio clip" Mark?

According to the piece, the system records an audio clip and then sends it back to a control base, and uses GPS (not GPRS) to pinpoint the location to within 25m.

I meant GPS audio clip. I hate to think that most 'gun crime' don't require a weapon to be fired. Police may rely on the system without actually going out and finding those responable for these crimes.

They'll be busy the week leading up to Bonfire night- cos the acoustic signature of a banger is as near as makes no difference the same as a gun shot- it has to be a fairly broad spectrum of analysis cos there are so many types of guns and ammo... so what will happen is the police will ignore the system during early November- so all the murders and armed robberies will take place then....New Concentrated Crime.(Just add villains) Smile I wonder sometimes- well most days actually, if the people in charge, know what they are doing.

I think it's all been cooked up by the West Midlands Police PR Department to enable Call Me Dave to hold have a press call and say "Look what they're doing about gun crime in Birmingham despite the swingeing cuts we're about to impose on them".

It's impressive, I'll grant them that.

The PR campaign, I mean.

What is this all about, are they expecting a lot of gun shots around Brum ? Rolling Eyes

What happens when they determine where it came from ?.

Like the speed camera I expect it will save Police being out on the street Rolling Eyes

It's a complete non-story, but gives the brum Police and the Home Secretary a bit of a PR leg-up.
