I just caught up on watching " An Ox's Tale" last night... a documentary on John Entwistle, apparently nicknamed "the Ox" .
I enjoyed the programme as I was indeed an early Who fan.. not so keen on the later stuff however.
It was pointed out in the programme there was some friction between Entwistle and Daltrey as to how loud John used to play his bass, making it difficult for Roger to hear himself sing!
But, I was surprised to see that Roger Daltrey didn't contribute to the show.. nothing! a little strange don't you think? Confused

Yes, I think it was on "Sky Arts" through our Virgin set up..... it may appear on BBC 4 yet..
He was regarded as the "quiet one" of the band but actually, he was just as much of a party animal as Moon!
( he had a nice '57 Cadillac convertible too... Razz )

Damn, I missed it and I do have Sky!

Was there ever a better bass solo than in My Generation?

John was a great bass player and i was gutted when he passed away.
The who used to have a lot of infighting and Roger and Pete have both admitted they don't like each other at times.

On the kids are alright dvd they have a section playing just John's bass during baba o'reily and wont get fooled again,as a failed bass player it blows me away

The "My Generation" bass bit certainly gets my air bass fingers twiddling that's for sure! but then the whole song does.. as well as other Who songs of that era.
Watching the show and, a quick search on YouTube had me watching John's performances for a hour or so.. yes, he could certainly play in his style although.. I still prefer Jack Bruce I have to say.

I loved the early Who stuff and it's energy but, like the Beatles, I never really rated each individual as a great musician.. they were just a great band to me.. ( where's my hard hat! Laughing )

Moon was an effective drummer but.. he didn't flow to my ears and was a little too scatty for my taste ( and made plenty of mistakes )
Townshend was visually excellent but to this day, I don't rate him as a guitarist.. again, he appeared to me to do just enough but no more.
Entwistle was as he wanted to be to me.. "the other one" who did some good bits with plenty of umph through his amps.
Daltrey was/is undoubtedly a good singer but borderline appeal to me own his own..
Together they were great! like the Beatles.. the big exception to this of course is McCartney who truly is an exceptional musician.

Watching some of the early Who performances where Townshend wrecked his guitars still makes me wince.. it was so wrong to do this.. beautiful instruments smashed for no reason.. and of course, they were (probably) the genuine thing, not cheap copies.
I can't help but wonder as to the jostling which must have happened at WoodStock when Townshend pitched his SG into the crowd.. and, I wonder where that guitar is now! somebody must have been chuffed!
