The government has named a consortium led by German firm Siemens as its preferred bidder to build new train carriages for its Thameslink route.

Siemens beat competition from Bombardier, which runs the UK's last remaining train factory in Derby. The £6bn North-South cross-London Thameslink programme will require 1,200 new carriages. Siemens said it was delighted with the decision, while Bombardier said it was "extremely disappointed".

I don't think the Government is trying to 'sell out the railways' but it is effectively sticking two fingers up to many skilled British workers

The Siemens contract price may seem attractive but that is to ignore the huge amount the Government will end up paying out in unemployment and other benefits should one of our last remaining railway workshops have to close through lack of orders

A very shortsighted decision in my humble opinion Sad
