Plans to scrap the use of Cheques by 2018 has been scrapped. UK Payments Council admitted there was no better paper alternative.

I still use cheques to pay occasionally, like for magazine subscriptions, even one of my credit cards (yes I know I can do it on the phone) and when our daughter got married recently a few of the suppliers asked for cheques: photographer, flowers, wedding cars, accessories for the reception.

In my business four of my customers always pay me by cheque.

So cheques are still widely used by smaller businesses.

All our utilities are direct debit now (n-power will soon pay me £100 for doing so!) and things like insurance, council tax, phones, and some things are paid by card on the net, and some via Paypal including anything we get on ebay. I pay my tax on the HMRC website.

In our small business we offer customers the chance to pay electronically but mostly they pay by cheque. We use a high street bank for our personal account so write cheques for credit card payments and anything else which is not a Direct Debit arrangement. Also I shop for my very elderly parents and they give me a cheque at the end of the month.

This is a very sensible decision and I say that as a person who hasn't written out a cheque for over ten years

Many people especially the elderly depend on them and the only reason the banks want to ditch them is because they are relatively expensive to process as compared to alternate methods of payment

Of course the upside is that keeps people in jobs and it's the ordinary junior bank employees who deserve support rather than the fat cats who have totally ruined the world economy
