REM have announced that they are going to split after 31 Years together. On there official website the band said -
"To our Fans and Friends: As REM, and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," the group wrote.
"We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." |

I guess that, to quote a line from one of their well known songs, to their devoted fans all over the world 'It's the end of the world as we know it'
I've always had a great respect for Michael Stipe and co as very competent musicians and songwriters and I'm sure some of the band will continue with solo projects for many years to come
Some of their early 90's output really was excellent _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

REM were certainly my favourite band in the 90s and I saw them in Paris in 1995. Best album IMHO was Out Of Time (no relation to another thread of this name!).
Automatic For The People was of course also brilliant, even if it has been rendered a bit cheesy by constant overplay. Everybody Hurts will always appeal to the great unwashed masses.
Monster, New Adventures In Hi Fi, and Up are also worth a listen. |

They made some great music, but presumably they know they'd had enough of being a band. |

I have to admit i prefer the stuff they did on IRS never saw them live but they did have good tunes, though saying that shiny happy people has to go down as one of the worst songs ever _________________ I found out how you can hurt an insect. It's the bees knees |
