Starting in 20 minutes is Part 1 of Composer of the Week featuring British Light Music Smile

I am so looking forward to hearing this series as this much-neglected type of music is hard to come by these days. Sad

It sure is and this has been a long-standing gripe of mine. But a week like this is a step in the right direction. Let's hope that they bring back some light music on a regular basis.

What a joy this is turning out to be already, with lots more to come. Let's hope this is the start of a new BBC commitment to the genre.

Listening now to the evening broadcast, and much enjoying the music (as I delete about 50 rogue registrations!)

Good to hear Brian Kay back on R3.

This has turned out to be a wonderful week of light music, with FNIMN still to look forward to and much else besides this afternoon and at the weekend.

I do hope that this will kick-start a revival in broadcasting this type of music. Radio 2 should be its natural home so all credit to Radio 3 for its efforts this week.

Oh Eileen thank you for the reminder! I knew there was something I wanted to 'listen again' to and completely forgot about this. Must set the recorder going. Had a look at Monday's playlist and it looked interesting so hope the rest will be too.

I wonder if this event will in fact signal the future 'transfer' of light music repertoire TO Radio 3 forever Confused

There is an article on light music in today's Guardian:

Listening to FNIMN on Radio 3! It has better DAB bitrate Smile

Enjoyable as it's not the same usual Coates, Sullivan, Farnon tunes. And Wow Lesley Garrett still has that great voice, what a lady!

I didn't enjoy FNIMN quite as much as I thought I would.

The part I absolutely loved was the selection of tunes written by Billy Mayerl for “Over She Goes”. (1hr24mins into the programme if anyone wants to hear it). I'd always thought of him as a pianist only so this was an eye (and ear) opener and I would like to hear more of his compositions.

It was and I'm now listening to the Music While You Work from Friday afternoon at 2pm.

Too late for John Wilson's Great Masters Of The Light Fantastic tonight (too engrossd in the tennis) which started at 8pm Saturday. Thank goodness for the iPlayer.

H

PS thanks to preraphaeliteangel for the article!

Yes Helen I couldn't leave the tennis either but am listening to the concert now.

I taped all the noon programmes during this last week and also some of the others. Sheer delight and I do hope that it bodes well for future broadcasts of this type of music which has been sidelined by the BBC for far too long.

Helen it has just been announced that tonight's concert has been recorded for showing on BBC4 around Christmas so that's something to look forward to. Just listening to the encore tune which is the old ITN sig tune. Takes me right back to my mini-crush on newsreader Huw Thomas Embarassed

I'll have to do the same Eileen, have only done Monday's so far. I've bookmarked R3 home page so I'll remember to glance at it more frequently. I think they played one of the ITN news themes on Monday's programme is that the one you're listening ot now.

Fantastic news about the John Wilson concert. I regret deleting last year's Rogers and Hammerstein Prom, although I recorded the sound only from R3 when it went out so all not lost.

Helen I recorded the Rodgers & Hammerstein concert last year. It is still lurking on the Skybox waiting for me to transfer it to a DVD. It may well come out commercially like the MGM Prom did.

By the way, how do you record radio progs? I'm afraid I use tape cassettes and had a mad dash last weekend around local shops trying to get a supply for all these programmes. Waitrose have stopped selling them and I found some in Argos just in time!

Haven't heard the John Wilson concert yet (the rest of the family doesn't share my enthusiasm for light music) but intend to listen again. But what splendid news if it's going to be on BBC4.

Eileen

I record them on to the computer from Listen Again using a paid for program called Total Recorder. There are free ones, Audacity is the one most people seem to use, but I prefer TR.

Total R was recommended by someone who was a member on here but back in the days of the original R2 message boards. I downloaded it and got away with it right away so stuck with it, must be about 6 years ago. I'd be lost without it now! You get newer versions as they come along for no extra charge.

Total Recorder will let you record from anything, you could transfer your cassettes to the PC using it. I think it was $12 when I got it, which was about £6 at the time. They will help you if you get stuck with anything as well.

This is the link http://www.highcriteria.com/ I only use the standard version.

I sometimes use minidiscs, but they like cassettes only have a certain length. I listened to some cassettes the other week and was surprised how good the quality was as they were fairly old.

I may have a link for an online source for cassettes. I'll have a look though my bookmarks if you'd be interested? They are becoming a bit difficult to get hold of.

Thank you Helen, that is very useful info. And yes, I'd be grateful if you could find a source of cassettes. I cleaned Argos out last week. I will definitely have a go at Total Recorder.

Must dash now as got loads to do today.

Eileen

This is one company I've used for minidiscs in the past, but they do cassettes as well.

The Light Music mania seems to have spread to last night's edition of the Apprentice. Amongst the snippets of background music, I picked out Jumping Bean, the Boulevardier and the Coronation Scot.

Have been listening to the Saturday evening John Wilson concert in sections this week and have now completed it. What a delight. PLEASE can we have some of this on a more regular basis. PS You can also read about John Wilson in the brand new Classic FM magazine.

It's always the same whenever the Beeb do something they always go over the top sometimes to the point where you never want to hear that particular genre ever again!

Not the case with the Light Fantastic, but it would be nice to have had it spread over a few weeks with something to look forward to.

Have posted in the TV section but then remembered we'd discussed it here. Would hate any of you to miss it!
