Beastie Boys star Adam Yauch has died at the age of 44.

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons's website GlobalGrind.com first reported the death.

It is unclear whether Yauch's cancer was the cause of his passing.

Yauch is survived by his wife and daughter.

Sad news. 44 is way too young.

Perhaps the should erect a giant VW badge as a memorial

Apparently our resident news hound has published slightly inaccurate information as I believe he died at aged 47 not 44 - still far too young by any reasonable standards

I was never a huge fan of the Beastie Boys (although I did like the track 'Fight for Your Right to Party') but there's no doubt their style was hugely influential in much of music in the 90's onwards and in many ways it seems strange that a bunch of white Jewish boys should be the catalyst for what followed in what is commonly known as the hip-hop genre

Really sad that anyone should meet such an early end Sad
