Not quite as meaningless as the Sony Awards, but the new RAJAR figures are out today and show a predictable surge in listening figures.

Overall the station gets 14.56m listeners a week (just 9000 short of it's highest-ever - but surely that's within the margin of error?)

Chris Evans: 9.23m
Ken Bruce: 7.72m (more than Chris Moyles who's on 7.1m)
Jeremy Vine: 6.72m
Steve Wright: dunno
Simon Mayo: up 200,000 on last figures

Brian Matthews has 3.7m on Saturday morning, which probably means Graham Norton's doing very well too.

All good stuff in theory, but with those figures I can't see much changing in the near-future despite what many of us here might think needs doing.

Good to see a few different shows having their listening figures listed.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (not that that has stopped them in the past).

My only worry is that SOTS gets less than half the audience of the Monday-Friday shows at that time, and that Bright Spark might be tempted to put a more general weekend show in there.

Actually, since it's doing so well, now might be a good time to privatise it, or sell it off. The Chinese might be interested - they've already bought the Weetabix to go with the Breakfast Show.

I wouldn't say the Sony Awards are as meaningless as are suggested above. I have a very good friend who won a Sony (in the regional documentary category) and he's immensely proud of it - not least because it involved a lot of hard work.

The Radio 2 RAJARs, on the other hand, show that people's expectations of "network radio" aren't very high, but my reckoning at least.

Well, maybe the regional awards have some value but with the national categories it just seems a case of knowing the right people and waiting your turn for a win.

But where is the line drawn between "deserving" and "the product of back-scratching"? What about national specialist programmes?

I don't know. It's just the way I perceive it. Like the reggae guy who won for Radio 2 - I'd never heard of him three weeks ago, now he's done an hour on 2Day and won a Sony. I find it hard to believe that's a coincidence.

I'd never heard of him either Ian so that makes 2 of us! Also I can't believe I didn't hear a single trailer for the series that he won with. I was away for 2 weeks last autumn when it apparently aired, but heck that's no time compared with the length of a series!

Re the Sony's, I felt the same when Evans won one after being at R2 for barely 6 months............. Rolling Eyes

Yes, considering the policy is to trail a show for weeks before and then, because of iPlayer, for weeks afterwards it's very odd that I didn't hear any trails either.

(But then, I'm one of the few listeners to Radio 3 so what do I know...? Wink)

Wow. Imagine what the figures could be if there was a decent afternoon presenter on?
