Well it's the start today with one of the host nations (Poland) kicking off at 5pm (our time) against Greece followed at 7-45pm by Russia v Czech Republic.
Disappointing to hear reports this morning of some racist chants when the Dutch team were training ....... hopefully this will be the only time we hear of such things. |

I just don't think it's right for the football authorities to have selected this particular location for what is a prestigious tournament - they must have done some research and been aware of the risks of this type of problem rearing its ugly head
Having said that I think bearing in mind what these footballers are being paid they just have to rise above it and get on with the job in hand
I'd be quite happy for people to abuse me verbally as much as they liked if I was earning the obscene amounts some of these top footballers are banking every week _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

If by abusive language you mean someone saying you're rubbish, ruddles, that's fine but no one, no matter how much they are paid, should have to put up with racist abuse..ever! |

Point taken Becky but all I'm saying is that if I were one of those Dutch footballers and fans were racially abusing me I be thinking to myself
'Who's having the last laugh here - all these sad people are herded into a substandard stadium and have probably been ripped off with inflated ticket prices and I'm earning in 90 minutes more than most of them will earn in a whole year - because of that fact I don't really care' _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I don't think for one minute any Dutch or any other black football player will be thinking like that, ruddles ..and neither should they have to ..whilst they are entertaing people with their skills the last thing that should be listening to is racist abuse from mindless idiots ...black people should be treated weith the same respect as everyone else ...no more no less
I would like to bet if any of those idiots found themselves on their own in the company of a black person you wouldn't hear a peep out of them. |

I would guess that's probably true Becky
Let it not be forgotten however that much of the abuse is apparently anti semitic which is equally unacceptable
We only ever seem to hear about racial abuse against black players whereas the problem is much wider than that _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Which is why everyone who is on the receiving end of such cowardly and illogical behaviour must take a stand. |

Absolutely, ruddles, and I only specifically mentioned black players in my opening post because that was what was headline news in the media yesterday concerning this tournament. |

I understand that Becky and I think one of the problems we have is that the British media seems always to concentrate on prejudice against certain groups to the exclusion of others which, knowing the British media as I do, I really don't find all that surprising
Just going slightly off topic I wonder whether this problem in Ukraine and to a lesser extent Poland has anything to do with the fact that both places were totalitarian societies dominated by the Soviet Union until relatively recently where free speech was pretty much banned althogether so now that position no longer pertains there has been a reaction in the other direction where people feel that they can say and do whatever they like without any consequences - nothing more than a thought which crossed my mind but it could make sense
Of course in this country we are travelling in the opposite direction where there has been a constant and to me sinister chipping away at the right to free speech over many years from politically correct dogooders some of whom I'm sure would love to ressurect the old Soviet Union right here in Britain _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Personally I don't think that is the case, ruddles, in this particular instance as there were no reports of anything else happening on that particular day other than racist abuse against the Dutch players, whilst they were training, there was nothing else to report
.
To get back on topic I thought it was a great start to the Championships...this group was thought to be the dullest |

It certainly was a really good start Becky - I watched the Poland v Greece game on the Big Screen before the Rugby last night and it was unexpectedly exciting and most of the audience really enjoyed it
I didn't get to see the other match live but I'm looking forward to seeing the highlights at some stage _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Well, the Germans as usual had luck on their side, with Portugal hitting the woodwork twice. Do the Germans ever have BAD luck? |

A shock win for the Danes yesterday followed by a win for Germany with neither match being as entertaining as the previous 2.
By pure chance I have a green top on today so I'm ready to cheer the Republic of Ireland on against Croatia after the rather tasty fixture of Spain v Italy. |
