Mark - why do you seem to constantly class people who are on benefits as 'scroungers'?
I used to give legal advice to many benefit claimants and the fact is that most were genuine people who had fallen on hard times often through no fault of their own
Of course there will always be a minority who rip off the benefits system just as people rip off the tax system but I am sick and tired of politicians like Cameron trying to court popularity and votes by blatant exaggeration and misleading propaganda _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Oh come on ruddlescat, Mark does not state that he thinks all benefit receivers are scroungers, he merely states that Cameron wants to identify those who ARE scroungers.
And I think we all do, well, tax payers do. _________________ -

My complaint John is that when posting such items Mark is using the type of language which might be found on the front page of the Sun rather than addressing the issue dispassionately which is what the subject demands
What the headline should be is that Cameron is trying to force young people under the age of 25 to carry on living with their parents just as many working young people do rather than funding them to live independently
That might be a good thing or a bad thing and I make no comment on that aspect but it has nothing whatsoever to do with anyone 'scrounging' _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Well I for one think that's a good idea, instead of all the girls who get pregnant so they can get their own house!

Well, I certainly don't agree that women should get pregnant just to secure a house but quite frankly the benefit aspect of that issue is minor - the bigger thing is that people are having children for the wrong reasons and in that situation the interests of the child are not paramount as they ought to be _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I absolutely agree, Ruddles.
And, by his leading post, Mark is swallowing the line of the tabloid press (and the Daily Mail in particular) by implying that everyone who draws State benefit in some way or other is a "benefit scrounger". Mark might not have intended to convey this in his stop press news bulletin, but that's definitely the way I read it as well.
Cameron is being very careful in his use of language for the moment; he's just laying a small bit on at a time and testing public reaction but we know where he's coming from. At the moment he's just out to appeal to the blue-rinse brigade with stupid shock-horror generalizations - but many of us aren't so stupid that we can't see what's really at the heart of all this. |
