Tottenham in North London saw wide spread riots on Saturday night. This was due shooting of a local man Mark Duggan. There was wide spread violence with buildings and vehicles set on fire and looting to damaged shops. This is utterly unacceptable.

I can't say I'm surprised

A friend of mine was working as an Environmental Health Officer and visiting properties in Broadwater Farm a few years ago at the time PC Keith Blakelock was killed and was lucky to get out alive

As far as I am concerned large cities are places to be avoided whenever possible and London is a definite no go place for me

There are simply too many unsavory people who seem to have a huge number of chips on their collective shoulders and in my view people are better off well out of it

Whilst from what I know I have some reservations about certain conduct within the Metropolitan Police there is absolutely no excuse for this wanton destruction which people in London and possibly the rest of us will end up paying for through additional public spending and higher insurance premiums Mad

It is very sad that a life has been lost in all of this. The main problem is i just don't see how the rioters can justify their actions. The guy who died pulled out a gun and shot at a policeman it's obvious what the outcome would be.

I supported the actions of the student rioters a few months back because they have valid grounds for doing so but last night was pointless

There seems to be some doubt if that's what happened. Statements from police and PCC take too long and so rumours start. Again police handling of situation doesn't help.

Makes me mad that TV crews can drive around watching looters and there's no police attending.

Seems to be a policy of police standing back and letting crime happen, same thing was observed when the banks and shops were attaacked in Central London.

I think one of the most worrying things of this incident is that Twitter and the like was used to incite protesters out on to the streets and cause this mayhem.

I very much agree Helen about concerns over the use of social media sites for people to organise rioting and I also agree that recent events bear no comparison with the unrest by a small minority during the student protests which were generally peaceful and justified

However I think the response of both the police and the Government to this latest criminality has been pathetic to say the least

I think the point has been reached where decisive action is needed including the use of rubber and plastic bullets and water cannon dye exactly as has been used in the past in Northern Ireland

Unless this problem is nipped in the bud straight away there is a serious risk that it could spread to even more parts of London and indeed other cities

Had this type of conduct happened in Paris Rome or Berlin I think it would have been over and done with in double quick time but because of course this is good old Britain the authorities pussy foot around for reasons of cowardice and so called political correctness Sad

The daily mail on its website is saying that the bullet in the radio was fired from a police gun. I may well have jumped the gun(bad pun) this does need looking at and if true very worrying

Saying that he did have a gun that seems clear and if you carry one of those you are asking for trouble

Someone tweeted tonight that 'the youth of the Middle East are rioting for basic freedoms - the youth of this country are rioting for a new pair of Nike's and an HD ready TV'.

The scenes on tv tonight are desperately depressing. To lose your home and livelihood to these mindless morons must unspeakably sad and frustrating.

I feel utterly depressed at the events of the last few days. A small minority are giving our wonderful country a terrible name, I just hope they all get the punishments they deserve. Crying or Very sad

Sadly that tweet sums up our country, a bit like the headline in the weekend press that having a satellite dish was now a human right on religious grounds................. Rolling Eyes

It's just so depressing.

Deeply distressing for all who have suffered injury, loss of home and businesses etc and also for us lookers-on who feel helpless and utterly bemused at how people can behave like this.

I used to live and work in Ealing just round the corner from where all that damage occurred. It certainly brings it closer to home and I feel like driving up from Hampshire to help with the clean-up.

Contrary to what Helen and I were thinking yesterday it seems that social websites are not now the main cause of this trouble as the rioters are not now using them quite simply because the police and authorities can see everything on there and take action - that is if they can be bothered Rolling Eyes

The rioters are communicating through closed circuit channels on Blackberry phones apparently which are not accessible to the general public

I don't fully understand the technical side of it but no doubt Colin can explain it better than I can

Well Parliament is now being recalled, for one day only, on Thursday.

I don't understand the Blackberry thing either Ruddles but they did say last night that they would cooperate with the police in trying to name the cuprits.

These youths have choices. They don't need to go out onto the streets to loot, steal and burn anything which gets in there way. The problem is some havn't got anything to do, they are treated with no respect, and can't even look to the future for a job. This is why Cameron excuses about blaming the whole society for there down fall is wrong. It's true there are some who only know one thing - steal to sell on for drugs etc, even steal off there parents too. This boils down to the way they were bought up. Parents don't give two sh**s and let them roam the street, not knowing where they are.

Also police resources can't last for ever, as they need to have time off and holidays. So time will tell once everything goes back to normal if calm will stay.

These thugs think " I'm big and clever and never get caught " They live in a bubble where a bullet proof screen in sitting around them. This is where the justice system needs to come down on them like a tonne of bricks. Most certaintly they will have no jobs to go back too. So who pays for them now. Scotland Yard have expected to have spent more policing the recent London riots than policing other major events. The bill which could be £34 Million could even top more than this once other forces from outside have billed Scotland Yard.
