I enjoyed the BBC2 "Arena" documentary on the background to Magical Mystery Tour last night - especially the contributions from Martin Scorcese. The digitally-restored and remastered HDTV scan looked and sounded fabulous after all the hard work both in LA and at Abbey Road Studios in London (the latter overseen by George Martin's son Giles).

It's such a pity, however, that it was shown in the wrong picture aspect ratio on BBC2 last night - either that or Ringo's bass drum and the Apple logo were always oval, rather than circular, and my eyes had been deceiving me all these years.

Let's hope the BluRay and the Apple iTunes releases have it right!

I'm presently listening to an hour long special on Smooth about the whole Magical Mystery Tour phenomenon and the background to it presented by Mark Goodier - very interesting and informative

I missed the Arena thing last night but will try to remember to catch up with it later Smile

Must watch that on iplayer (if it is).

I vividly recall watching the film at Christmas 1967, and my folks saying it was rubbish. At the time I didn't think much of the film but the songs were magical.

I think I was the first person in the world Smile to identify lines from King Lear (when Edgar kills Oswald) towards the end of I Am The Walrus, we had just done the play for O-level.
