Yes I know... Me the troglodyte, talking apps: well yes. You see, hubby bought me one of them there techno pad things for Christmas:- we are now inseparable, not hubby and I, no, me and this techo marvel thing:- anyway apart from doing everything my old laptop does, you can download loads of useful apps from various places- and it fits in my handbag! Anyway my app of the week is Google Sky Maps- it’s free. It’s fantastic :- it is unsurprisingly, as the name suggests, a map of the sky:- it’s like Brian Cox in a box – you point your pad at the sky and bingo, up pops a map of all the stars, planets and other interesting celestial objects and because the pad has a gps locator thing – the map is all co-ordinated with where you are – so you see an object in the sky ( it works best at night ) point your pad at it and Tanah, it’s like you spent 5 years at uni studying astro-physics, you know what it is. How cool is that!?
The main use for my pad so far though has been listening to Alex on the BBC media player app thing. |

In my first year at University I used to share a room with a guy who was studying Astrophysics - and I can honestly say he bored me to death constantly banging on about obscure spacial matters - on many occasions I could quite happily have throttled him - or shoved him down a black hole _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

If the graphic on FB is anything to go by it is pretty clever; however, in the average cloudy, light-polluted British night it's difficult to see anything, other than the Moon, with the naked eye, and certainly not Mercury or Pluto. _________________ Ron |

It's much better than the screen grab I put on FB, Ron... you can zoom in and move around, look at the other side of the world.... we were in Cornwall last weekend, clear sky it worked brilliantly .... I've been looking for all those stars that get named after people for £99 - can't find a single one....... ... |

Being a Geordie lass, quite a few of my Fb friends are Geordies:, like all proper Geordies they listen to Metro Radio and nowt else. Anyway I found an app called tunein, which means you can listen to any radio station in the country, so I've been listening to Metro Radio all weekend. It's brilliant, and feels like I'm back home, Radio 2 is now, Radio who?! |

You can even get W963 where hubby was a DJ while at uni, although it' s called Warwick Radio now.The same place Simon Mayo started. On the tunein app Radio 2 is described as "contemporary adult" have they listened to Ken Bruce, Alex Lester etc etc.... |

This week's app is Ubersocial, it's a cool beans interface to twitter ( which I joined this week) It's mainly celebs promoting themselves, products or programmes and now and again having a spat with each other. There is quite a lot of useful stuff on there too, travel info, news etc... |

Should I Really Join Facebook?
A good laugh for people in the over 50 group !!!
When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting World.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship..
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me.
Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I'm bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, "No, but I do fart a lot."
Senior citizens don't need any more gadgets. The TV remote and the garage door remote are about all we can handle. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |
