Did anyone else hear David say at the end of last week's programme that he wouldn't be here for the 'next few weeks'? I recall Mark saying on here that he had been in hospital recently so I do hope he is okay and will be back presenting live ASAP.

Apparently the shows will be made up from archive editions of which there are plenty (David's own words!). I wonder how far back they will go?

Yes Helen I heard him say that and I too have been hoping that all is well with him. Also in August he is due to appear with the Len Phillips Big Band in Eastbourne like he did last year. I do hope he is OK. His programme is such a lovely way to end the weekend.

I remember you going last year Eileen.

It will be interesting to see what we get tonight. I've been listening this afternoon to an old Alan Titchmarsh Melodies For You (Feb 07) whilst doing some work on my computer. I thought how the programme had changed since then and the final ones we heard from him, you don't realise it at the time though. It was 2 hours and a good listen.

Last night's show was a repeat of one broadcast in 2009.

Hi Graham

Funnily enough I too was just wondering if anyone had heard anything. I've not heard anything at all anywhere, so I wonder if maybe he's just having a long holiday? I hope that is the case and nothing else.

I think he's just gone on holiday, hasn't he? He's probably contracted to do 40 hours a year and they run repeats instead of getting stand-ins.

I would much rather hear repeats of his old shows than have a stand-in. Sunday nights would feel incomplete without him.

I've never heard any repeats before Ian. Of course it could be due to cutbacks. Sunday evenings are full of them these days.

I'm not a regular listener, but my girlfriend is and tells me this has happened before.

I know the material is such that, unless you're a really avid and regular listener, you won't know if it's a repeat, and he's been doing it for so long that there should be plenty "in stock", but we've come to a pretty poor state of affairs if the Beeb have to save sixpence in this way.

David himself remarked on the extensive archive of past shows when he said he would be away from the show Ron!

It has just been announced that David is recovering well from two big operations and will be returning to his programme in the near future.

I certainly wish him all the best. A lovely chap.

Paul Donovan had a nice piece on David within his Radio column in the Sunday Times (Culture section) yesterday.

Last night it wasn't announced before the programme that it was a repeat. Is David back I wonder?

I have just seen on Digital Spy that David's programme will be off the air for the next 13 weeks and will be replaced by a series on Sinatra starting next Sunday.

This is very worrying. I do hope he will get through whatever illness he is facing. I've "known him" all my life. I was first aware of him as a child listening to his multi-roles in Journey into Space. Then as a teenager I purposely listened to him presenting Cyril Stapleton's Show Band Show on Saturday lunchtimes just to hear his lovely voice and queued up for ages at a Radio Show in London to get his autograph.

He is due to appear on stage in Eastbourne this August with the Len Phillips Big Band (for which I have my ticket and saw last year).

I know he can't be around for ever but I will miss him so much on Sunday nights with his lovely choice of music.

PS The Sinatra series is presented by David and was first heard in 1998.

I think it was a repeat Eileen, I heard Janice say 'get well soon and they were thinking of him' at the start of her show.

I was just thinking I hoped they'd find a seasonal repeat for next Sunday as he always starts and finishes with tracks from Easter Parade. I note Desmond Carrington's theme is Easter Parade on Friday. It's not Easter for me unless I hear it at least once!

I echo all that you say about David and sadly Mum will not hear his programmes any more Sad and we both talked about David missing and wondering if he was ill. I do hope they will give us a similar programme if the worse was to happen.

I don't think I heard the Sinatra series first time around so I am enjoying it!

There was a great series that used to be on Radio 2 before Benny Green I wouldn't mind being repeated...Hooray For Hollywood.

Even giving Russell two hours instead of one and if he does not want to do instrumentals as his show is about songs, he could maybe split the broadcast so the second hour has a mixture.

Hopefully David will be back on air soon. Apparently he was spotted this week at Broadcasting House, according to a tweet from Corrie Corfield (R4 Announcer).

Heard the trail for David's return to R2 this morning! Very Happy

I presume it will be this Sunday as the Frank Sinatra series ended last night.

I've had a mail from old friend of the forum, Scott, and he's read in Radio Times Online that David Jacobs' series, with new shows, will return Sunday 8 July.

That is SUCH good news, Helen Very Happy. I have enjoyed the Sinatra series very much especially the last episode which featured some magical tracks, but it will be so lovely to have David back again with new programmes.

Yes, the news was on the front page of the R2 website yesterday and with the trailers (which started as soon as the Sinatra show ended) it's good the station are giving his return a good push. I think a certain former controller would simply have pensioned him off.

After Sinatra died, the late Benny Green did a two-hour R2 special in his honour. I recorded it using the Hi-Fi tracks of a VHS recorder and still have it somewhere in my collection. I must digitise it and listen again because it really was very good. Sadly, Mr. Green himself didn't last a lot longer I recall.

Good news about David Jacobs. He's an icon in the same way that Brian Mathew is.

Thought you'd be pleased Eileen!

Strangely I thought of that Benny Green recording last night when I heard the last of the Sinatra series Colin! I seem to remember hearing Benny Green in the car so I wouldn't have recorded it. I was pretty much brought up to Sinatra's music as both my parents were huge fans and all his music brings back so many memories of my childhood. I didn't like it at the time though.

I wasn't on the R2 site at all yesterday so didn't see the pics Ian, as you say it's good they are promoting him so much.

John and Eileen

Perhaps a smiley emoticon wouldn't have gone amiss at the end of my post ...makes such a difference at times Smile

I'm sure the advert was a bit tongue in cheek as it goes along the lines of this programme is not for you if you watch reality shows and play loud music in your car with the window down...it's for discerning listeners..... Smile

Oh that's OK, not snobby at all. I sometimes play swing music in the car with the window down, a rare thing though with this current weather!
